Is it the manager's fault we haven't got any defenders?

No it isn't however, it is his fault that he picks too many players out of position. Tbf to Roy he isn't the only England Manager to to that but I can't understand for the life of me why we persist in going down this road. Players get picked for England based on their performances at club level where they play in their chosen position, they then get told to play in a different position for the National team. We then wonder why they don't reproduce their club form.

We didn't even qualify twice for the World Cup before the premier league. We've always thought we were better than we are. Though tonight was exceptionally crap. Suarez was always looking to sneak in behind the defence like that, I mentioned it about two minutes before he scored. Awful defending, and seemingly incapable of defending crosses whatever the stature of the opposition. Loads of pace in the team, and yet unwilling to use it and just stood still passing it sideways and backwards for 70 mins. It was like watching Macclesfield try and play tikka taka.

You've hit the nail on the head there. If you look at teams that win tournaments like these, they play without fear. Once again tonight, England played like a team that was afraid to lose. Too slow and too many unforced errors.

We are not going to beat these teams with the tactics we are using , the players aren't good enough . The only way is to play the old English way , two wingers getting in crosses to a big rough centre forward.

Three goals from a big centre forward who could head a ball and didn't drift out of position plus a centre back and midfielder (Charlton and Stiles ) who kicked 4 colours out of anyone who dared come into our half together with a second centre back with a football brain.

I don't know which other defenders he could have picked to be honest. Gerrard lost the ball for the first goal and set up the second yet who would not have had him in the team. Sturridge scores with his first touch so often for the Dippers but his finishing was powderpuff tonight. Rooney hits the wood work at 0-0, the ref bottles an obvious red card yet it's all Hodgson's fault? We could easily have drawn both games - and according to the FIFA rankings we are below both of those teams, yet it is all Hodgson's fault?

It's nothing to do with B teams and everything to do with greed at the top and starvation of investment at grass roots.

 

All schools should have top quality 3G pitches and fully qualified coaches at junior level. Just compare the number of qualified coaches coaching y youngsters in England compared to Germany. I think it's somewhere like ten times more.

 

Then what incentives are there for lower league clubs to invest in youth development when the rewards when they move on are so small.

Possibly would have helped if they had given Lambert more than 4 minutes and fed more than 1 ball into him.
