Are two quality players on there way to VP for assault on the playoffs?

I think I see things a lot differently from most posters.

The Lee Hughes departure is a convenient, amicable situation that has arisen through the realisation from both parties that our squad is good enough without him. All I see it doing is trimming 50k from the wage bill from here til the end of the season. Given the opportunity (and I suspect this will happen in June) I'd like to see us offloading 3/4 more players who are happily collecting 2k/week yet rarely featuring. If we keep the core of the squad together I don't see the clamour for signing more costly, experienced pros. We've seen that this league isn't as tough as we all thought and that when given a chance the youngsters are ready to step up. I'm hoping Hugill and Johnson have paved the way for 2 or 3 others to come from the development squad and be akin to new signings. If not, what's the point in the development squad?

I thought this is what everyone was thinking

I don't think many people think differently to you. People are simply speculating where and who we could strengthen with but I doubt anyone aside from EH and weareskint would hold it against Smurthwaite if he took the opportunity to simply save a little of the money he is putting in to the club to subsidise it.

Speculate to accumulate is my opinion. If Smurf was to invest the savings on Hughes wage in two new players(even good loan players) it would help the squad no end and perhaps help to convince Micky Adams that he and the club have ambitions beyond survival. This will help the manager to get our better players to sign new deals.

If just an extra 500 fans buy into the Chairman's ambitions it will more than cover the expense incurred. failure to do so could see 500 becoming disillusioned and deciding not to attend the remainder of the season's games if our form dips.

Remember that Smurf and Wildes said we would be an ambitious and competitive force in L1. A couple of decent acquisitions would confirm this intent.

If Hughes does go as many suggest, release mo and that should give us enough wedge to sign a decent winger, add to that a forward on loan someone like connor salmon from derby would be ideal, or one of sheff utds unused forwards!!

You know if people get released we still have to pay up their contract right?

Good post. Wasn't O'Neill highly thought of before getting injured? I wonder if his leap to the bench at PNE might be a sign of things to come?

Correct although I reckon only 5 players are on around 2k a week Dicko lines pope Robbo and maybe

Jones or loft

The fringe players like shuker willo dodds Taylor etc will be on more like 1k a week

This will be a serious indication of where smurfs ambition is for port vale right now. Fair play he invested heavily to bring lee hughes in last year he was a big money earner by our standards. Does he commit and get a couple of players to get us a few big cup gates and some big play off gates possibly v wolves or does he simply leave it as is. We have a big big opportunity right now.

For me it's a pivotal moment in smurfs ownership.

This will provide zero indication of Smurfs ambition. If the fair play rules cap on salaries indicate we cannot sign anybody then we cannot sign anybody. A chairmans ambition has nothing to do with it.
