Summer transfer rumours and speculation

Not sure about Shorrock's defending, but I thought Plant's was half decent. Both are good going foward. For me, Plant had done enough the season before last to be in the squad and I was mildly disappointed he was shipped out.

What a side that was!!

We took it for granted at the time, thought it would last for ever. But we could not afford to keep the likes of Guppy.

I know this is off-topic but as @bobbymanc mentioned Steve Guppy putting the fullback on his arse... I can't resist this video from the OVF YouTube channel...

Brilliant!😁

Reply from my Walsall mate who has mixed feelings on Liam Gordon.

He's not a great defender, very quick as a wing back going forward, but his  final ball is very poor. In his first season he had a bad injury and we saw him through it . He says he will be surprised if he starts for us as we must have someone better.

My mate is level headed and always tells it how it is . We shall see how he shapes up in Vale colours.

Funny you post that. I work in Manchester and have a mate there who’s a Blackpool fan. He said pretty much the same about Gabriel. An athlete but not that great on the ball. Seems like that’ll be the DM type of wing back we’re going for rather than a traditional style full back converted to wing back .

I m encouraged then because both descriptions of our new wing backs mention the word quick.

Remarkable how Doncaster finished above us when Grant McCann couldn't rely on the OVF scouting team!

Although it was a different era I can remember Robbie Earle being asked what he thought was the difference between what is now league 1 and what is now the Championship (when we were half way through that first season up there)

His reply was ...  in the third division clubs had one or two good players. In the second division they are all good players.

Vale fans really struggle with the concept that players can thrive/struggle in different systems under different managers. We saw Lorent Tolaj go from an inconsistent player with a dreadful touch to one of the more lethal strikers we've seen at Vale since 2000, all in the space of about a month, because his position shifted about 12 yards inside, yet we struggle to imagine that an entirely new football club, manager, and tactical set-up might get more out of a player than his last situation.

Players are fixed quantities with attributes like on FIFA in some fans' views. Players have numerical values like pace and passing which are completely static. If Hanlan was bad at Wycome he simply must be bad at Doncaster/PVFC.

Fans completely wrote off Hanlan without ever seeing him play and are now wheeling away that we haven't signed him. I know it's all a bit of fun and games on the forum but the confidence to which fans pronounce judgement without having watched a player is borderline impressive. If you've watched him play.

I think the striker we do sign will come with an unconvincing record, perhaps malinged at a previous club and the wiki page won't have many double figures on it, and he'll be written off without questioning what he specifically brings to this system under this manager compared to previous systems under previous managers.

These are flawed footballers, hence their trade being plied in the 3rd tier, and therefore will be more situation and system-dependent, rather than the top-level players who are so well-rounded they are close to system proof - yet we still see footballers thrive in one setting and flop in another at the highest level.

Or maybe sometimes looking at a record is quite a good indicator? Hanlon has recently spent 11 months out injured and has a poor record across a host of sides. It’s completely different to the Tolaj situation. (Who started off excellently until randomly dropped by Moore, then had no confidence and then had the poor touch)

Not every player with a poor record will sign for us and be a success. Look at Loft, the majority of times they’re record is how it is for a reason.

It makes me laugh on here. If you say a signing is great without seeing him too much it’s fine, but be ever so slightly so critical of the signing and it’s a case of you’ve only checked wiki, you’ve never seen him play etc. Most on here see Gabriel as being an excellent signing, without seeing him play which is all good, say Hanlan wouldn’t be great and it’s apparently not ok.

He may have done well, but I’m personally happy we haven’t got him, there’s plenty of players around with a record similar or better and plenty who haven’t just spent 11 months out injured. I’m more than happy for us to take a punt on someone not proven, rather than proven to not be particularly good.

Irrelevant anyway as we haven’t got him.

Almost as remarkable as posters suggesting people haven't seen him play.

Haven't watched a Premier league game since maybe December,  a bore fest. Title over, relegation over.

However I've watched a heck of a lot of lower league football and my opinion which means zilch in comparison to the genius McCann is that we've completely swerved one here, assuming we were in for him.

One can only assume Street is wanted by Lincoln. Now he's a player who transformed Doncaster from January onwards.

Time will tell, but it's extremely glib to suggest people have only looked on Wikipedia.
