Cheltenham fans saying Alfie may is leaving them. I'm not saying we have any chance of getting him but he would be a good signing for any club in this league next season.

Hell go Championship I reckon or one of the real big hitters in L1.

Ripley released! Let’s sort the keeper out Flickers!

Not surprised. D3D4 podcast was speculating weeks ago that the likes of Stockport, Wrexham and other minted clubs like Salford would be hoovering up all the goalscoring talent they could, offering ridiculous terms unaffordable by any other clubs. Would love to have seen Alfie may play for us but, sadly, we ain't in that league. It shows what we are up against.

Interesting to see what happens...

Love this time of year when we're all like kids who've been given a fiver to spend at a car boot sale and we think it will buy us a Picasso. From the "This day in history" feature in the right hand column, (which always brings back memories of players I had forgotten we ever had), it's clear that if we can't compete financially, we'll have to find some hidden gems. Most of the players in today's column who we let go at this time of year reflect how much we have been relying on free transfers that didn't work, youth teamers that didn't make it, and erratic and injury prone players at the end of their careers in the past.  In the end, it is usually all about money if we want to buy an instant solution. How much money are we able to spend on players realistically?  Could we, for example, buy another Ray Walker type for £120,000 (ten times what we paid for the original) from a Prem or Championship side reserve team, or is that just not going to happen these days?

I would like us to look at non league prospects, and perhaps we are scouting in that level already? Giving a good National League player the chance to play 2 divisions up should be an attractive option for the player, even if some teams in that league and League 2 are presently spending money they haven't got.  And we simply have to get in better loan players from the reserve sides of Championship and even Premiership teams surely?  Other teams in our league seem to manage it, and we often reference them in this forum.  Why aren't we doing that? If money isn't the issue there, why aren't they coming to us? Our reputation for looking after players seems to remain strong, and the players leaving us speak highly of the club.

I know a player's wage demands exclude us from some deals even when there is no transfer fee involved, and I can see the sense of not over reaching ourselves financially, but we're in League 1 now, and if we want to stay there, we all know we need some solid, reliable players ahead of next season. We're light all over the pitch. I know our DoF gets a lot of stick on here, but I don't envy him his job in spending his fiver at the car boot sale this time round.  There are so many areas to improve, and I'll be interested to see whether we just go for a "more of the same" approach using League 2 and League 1 players their clubs no longer want, the Ian Taylor/Andy Jones approach by shopping at non-league level, or the Ray Walker/Dean Glover approach by getting in reserves from better teams.

Interesting times....

Amazingly, that £12,000 for Walker would only be worth about £34,000 these days. That's based on the rate of inflation since then but my guess is that football inflation has gone up a lot more. We wouldn't be able to get anyone remotely as good as Walker these days for that amount, so you're right in saying we have to become more inventive, especially looking at non-league. Peterborough seem to have made a fair living out of it!

Peterborough reduce their risks though by being able to pay relatively large transfer fees for non league players we would have to buy non league players below the standard of a Peterborough.

For a better strategy I think we should look at league 1 players who ve started about 20 matches and had about 10 substitute appearances but are no longer wanted by their club and are out of contract. Having said that I suppose any signing is a risk !!

I understand that we’ll get money from Sky next season and some money from the EPL. Does anyone have any idea what sort of figures we’re talking.

Tge reason I ask is that with all the players leaving that we will need to replace are we going to be looking at any players that have a bit of class and experience (but not ones with too much experience, just after a final pay off) or are we looking at basement bargains.?
