For an opener to not average 30 for England is ludicrous.

Doesn't say much for the competition that he continues to be selected.

Yeah England seem at ease with it as though his role is almost to act as a pinch hitter which I think is at best unnecessary in tests. It’s a joke someone like him seems untouchable yet Foakes is just cast aside without a second thought.

Overall a good day for England. Bowled them out after putting them in and less than 200 behind you’d take that even with the three wickets down. Root looked good and hopefully a pissed off Bairstow can prove a point tomorrow. Forecast to be hot and sunny tomorrow so in theory should be a good day to bat.

Incredible bowling with pace by Mark Wood, I gather he's been injured as the reason why he's missed the first two games. It's a risk and up to the bowler but if a bowler like him can bowl 3-4 over spells 2-3 times a day it's worth playing him as bowlers usually win test matches.

Surprised he didn't bowl more at Mitch Marsh.

So a glorious day for batting and to possibly get back in the series....and then Root out 2nd ball of the day to a nothing shot.

Hopefully we can make a game of it but 0-5 is definitely a possibility.

That wicket has shown the biggest difference in the teams. If that catch went to the England slips it’d probably have been put down.

Is their anyone in England who can bat properly surely the coaches can learn the first thing you do is keep your eye on the ball .You do not play a short ball by turning away from the ball and sticking your head there. And don't even get me started about Moeen Ali what the bloody hell was he doing and then walks off shaking his head.Should never be picked again Woakes last over before lunch trying to hit a bouncer with 4 or 5 Aussies waiting on the boundary just let the ball go idiotic batting

The game is up, we live in hope but the game is up, prioritise for England now;

Dependable wicketkeeper.

Fasttrack a spinning prospect.

Can we not coach batsmen to select balls to LEAVE. Most wickets have been lost playing balls that should be left. Is this really so difficult to ingrain in professional cricketers.

Ben Stokes is just simply incredible. What a knock and given how the first session went to only be 26 behind on change of innings I think you’d take that.

I wouldn't have. Very disappointing that in the 3 Tests so far, we've failed to gain a 1st innings lead when we've had the benefit of winning all tosses and arguably the better conditions have been in our favour.

Yes but I was talking about given the situation at lunch where it was looking at over 100.

Anyway this match will be over tomorrow one way or the other. The Aussies to me look like they got a bit stuck in the third innings with just Carey and the tail to come. England need to win the morning session and I think we’ll win this test.

Key partnership this, I think get these two and they won’t get many more, tail end don’t like woods pace. Then it’s down to us to bat properly, no need for stupid batting, pitch is good, loads of time. Bowled really well last night, just need the keeper to hold a catch!

If we do win, I really think we need to start batting longer and tiring this Aussie attack

I agree with your assessment apart from not agreeing that it will be all over today.  As you say, the Aussie's 2nd innings isn't going anywhere at the moment, but of course time is on their side.  They only have to draw this Test and they retain the Ashes.  With rain forecast today, they can afford to be patient, wear down a threadbare England attack and bat England out of this match.

Yeah I’ll happily concede it definitely won’t be over today now. I do think just because the game is so far advanced I don’t see a situation where there’s a draw unless there’s a deluge for two days straight. As it happens the rain delay is probably favourable to the England bowlers (especially Wood) to get them a bit of extra rest that they don’t seem to get much of with how we barely bat until the second new ball now.
