I have to agree about Ken Hancock, great keeper, as was Ray King before him, but modern goalkeeping has changed. Sweeper keepers are the modern way. While not comparing Cov to the likes of Manuel Neuer he has the capacity to improve and allow Vale to play a more expansive game. I think he does command his area better than Stone who of course can develop into a first class keeper but is not there yet and is not ready as a starter in league 1. If we sign a first choice keeper then then the argument is moot. Patience is fine but as things stand we are currently worse off than at the final whistle at Wembley. We have lost two strikers (expected) plus the back up striker/winger one of the best players at the club (Gibbo) one of ur two keepers  as well as the first team coach. Ok we have signed Cass (good signing) and Ojo (unknown). I see other clubs in our league making some excellent signings and a lack of any news from the Vale is a bit worrying. The lack of any information from the club or elsewhere is making this thread a bit pointless. Obviously if two experienced strikers and speedy wide player and a top keeper are announced tomorrow it will calm the nerves. The clock is ticking!!!

How could we forget his red card in pre season given how it's brought up every time Cov is mentioned. Never, in all my decades as a Vale fan, have I ever seen such a reaction and constant slagging of a player over a red card in pre season. We've set a precedent now guys. I expect any player sent off in a meaningless pre season game to be subjected to the same treatment. Even if it's Conlon, Worrall and the like
What concerned me was Cov effectively had 3 sending offs in the last 12 months. More than the whole team combined which is going some when he is the goalie and not a combative midfielder or last ditch defender. DC obviously thinks the same, no surprise for me.

Jim Arnold and Grew?

Was talking to Grewy on Saturday,  now works for an outdoor event and catering company.

Despite only playing limited games he says he's always at WBA doing stuff and hasn't set foot at Vale in years despite still living locally. Sad .

I'm not sure we had a really good keeper under Rudge. Mussy was decent enough, but that's about it.

Mussy would give you kittens in todays game where the keeper is expected to play a lot more actual football.

I liked Grew too, but still only decent. I never saw Arnold. Goodlad is the best all round keeper I've seen in the 30 years I've been watching.

I'm pretty sure that Jim Arnold won Player Of The Year in 85/86 - says a lot when your keeper does that in a promotion season!
