Who should we sign?

I was very downhearted when we were linked with Lloyd BUT having had time to think about it,we have to trust in Askey and give him a fair crack should he return,he is older, has played for Askey and we do know he can cross a ball(ideal for Pope) so if he does sign then I will back him but we do have to bring in quality as well that will cost.

What I am interested in is what goalscorers we bring in,Askey like Aspin said we need goals and we do know they cost money,so lets see on that one

There are two ways to look at a signing. If its just on the absolute quality then lloyd is disappointing. However a team is greater than its parts. We have often brought in players with a bit of quality and then tried to make them fit together. If lloyd is brought in because askey has a plan and feels he fits in to the way he wants to play, then that would be better than imbalanced, square pegs into round holes squads of the last few years. Would prefer a higher quality player and a manager with a plan, but being tactically well organised will get you a long way in league 2.

Well put!

One person who would probably be happy if we signed Lloyd will be Tom Pope as the one thing that Lloyd is very good at is crossing the ball into the danger area, something that was sadly lacking last season.

Lloyd couldn’t put a cross on a ballot paper.

He has not improved since he left the Vale.

When he played for Macc against us he just stood around on the wing and Clarke had an easy game.

He still can’t tackle and get involved in the game.

Sol Campbell didn’t give him a regular place in a poor Macc side fighting to stay in the league and obviously has seen more of him to not offer him an extension to his contract. He would only be a cheap signing to make up the numbers and not a regular first team player so what’s the point of signing him?

There are far better players available released by other clubs who would do a better job.

That makes sense and if that’s the reason behind the signing then fair enough.

Remember though that a player can appear poor under one manager but great under another. Worrall looked on his way out based on his performances for Aspo but looked like a winner when Askey came in. Maybe Sol didn't rate Lloyd.

Maybe he wanted hard working players who can tackle.

Maybe tackling isn't what he's wanted for.

There are any number of players who can't tackle but are first name on the team sheet because they have another job, whether it's scoring goals or providing them. I'm guessing Askey sees Lloyd as one of those.

Worrall is OK for L1 and L2. Lloyd is OK for the National League and National League North. That is what their record of career appearances tells us.

At the end of the day if Askey wants Lloyd then that’s up to him.

He will build his own squad and if he fails or succeeds it’s all his own doing.

For me he’s a waste of a wage but if Askey thinks he has something then we just have to trust him.

I think a lot of people see this as a typical Norman signing

He lives local

He would be cheap

He’s not that good

Etc

Now that Norman has left people I think are hoping for more exciting / positive signings and this just smells of the old regime

I think we have to trust Askey and give him a chance to mould his own team

Yes but they are called Messi and can score a goal or two.

What does Lloyd bring to the table?

Just hope he raises the bar higher than Lloyd when looking for players to improve the team.
