World Cup 2018

Recommended Posts

We should get to the quarters, but that's as far as we'll get, as we'll most probably play Brazil or Germany. The depth in the other nations squads is quite scary, and most the players they've all left out would all walk in to England's side.

They've all got more players to choose from,we'll have less than 30% playing in the PL at the next world cup?

Kane apart, where are the goals going to come from ? Alli possibly, but there will be too much reliance on the captain to find the goals.

No creativity in midfield and Southgate’s turgid approach spells yet another early exit.

I just don’t see enough goals in this team to make any sort of impact on the tournament.

I disagree 100% for me goals won’t be the issue it will be the other end. Kane, vardy, rashford, Sterling, Alli and Lingard is more than enough creativity and firepower.

At quick look at the stats suggest otherwise.

Kane apart ( as I quoted ) the 5 players you mention have a combined total of 15 goals in their 116 England appearances. That’s LESS than 1 goal every seven games from what will be (even if they all play) half the outfield team.

So I repeat, where are the goals going to come from ?

Obviously it will largely depend on them finding their club form somewhat. On paper no team in the world would want to come up against Kane, Vardy, Rashford, Sterling and Alli, and anybody that tries to say otherwise is simply talking absolute nonsense. I don't think for a moment that we'll be a free scoring side no matter how long we do or don't last in the competition, but we have more than enough to win games if we defend well.

Despite not being much of a fan of his at all you could also add Danny Welbeck to the list above, as he often performs better for country and club and a record of 16 goals in 39 games for ultimately a wide player isn't to be scoffed at.

I have to say too how much I've been impressed by Southgate, although that could rapidly change! I was against his appointment as I didn't think he warranted being considered. But despite his soft touch image he's made some very brave and bold decisions. Under many other managers Rooney would still be a part of the set up and Joe Hart our number one. We also have some sort of an identity in that it's clear to see the way he wants his team to play.

Took Lineker 8 caps to notch first goal and Rooney 6 caps. Let's hope Southgate picks the one that is going to start his run of goals.

Incidentally, anyone else noticed the management of expectation concerning England's chances? They've been deliberately played down.

Good move as if we do well we've exceeded expectations; do badly and it was what we were expecting anyway.

I just hope we don't face another Iceland.

I too am glad to see expectations have been played down for once. We just need to be realistic, that's all, and I'm hopeful rather than over confident that we can put up a decent showing. All I want is for England to play as well as they can and see how far it gets us, we know we have some glaring weaknesses which are likely to limit how far we go but what we don't need is another embarrassing monumental underperformance like we've seen too often in the past, most recently against Iceland. Iceland!! They have a population smaller than the Stoke & Newcastle conurbation!
