One thing for sure. For the 3rd season running it'll be interesting to see all these new faces. It's been like a revolving door at the Vale for the past 24 months. I just want some stability and mid table safety this year, hopefully pushing towards the top end, but certainly no more struggles.

The main difference this season is confidence in the selectors.

Shrewsbury fans I know at work like him as a player. They believe their change in formation and tactics last season (more high energy) was why he wasn’t in the starting 11. Over the 2 seasons there the fans I know don’t seem to have such an overtly negative view of him. Who knows what went wrong at Chesterfield, he probably feels he made a mistake in going there.

 

Anyway we know how negative our fans can be and this is another example of it, totally irrational and personal it seems. Each to their own though. I hope he plays well for us when he’s picked.

 

Similar to most of the Shrewsbury fans I know, most thought he was a decent player in general and did pretty well the first season just lost his place in the side and as they were doing so well under Hurst struggled to get back in the side. It's no disgrace.

Pugh...can go to left back for 1-2 games.

 

Yes, but as superb as Montano was at left-back for those few games last season I have a couple of concerns :-

 

1) he seems to get regular strains\pulls and so may miss a bit through injury

2) is he prepared to knuckle down and commit to the switch from winger to a permanent left-back, rather than just filling in there short-term?

 

Hopefully he'll stay fit as he was excellent when switched to left-back.

Agreed. He does seem a bit injury prone.

 

It perhaps won't happen now but a fit Knops would be a good addition as he's naturally left footed and can cover in the middle as well as at left back. Be nice to see him a Vale shirt again.

We need cover there and I'd prefer someone other than Pugh. I'd also add that Montano still has a lot to learn from a defensive point of view too, but in the main he looked the part for those few games he played there.

Always thought Dodds was a good player for us. Actual skill, which is rare at this level.

Those of you hammering him really need to realise that if he performed game in game out he wouldn’t be playing lower league football!

I think he’ll bring something to this squad even now he’s a bit older.

He wasn’t very good when he left us and I was surprised he was even offered another contract (which he turned down and went to Shrewsbury)He has been in decline recently and only a bench warmer at Shrewsbury and then a bench warmer at a relegated Chesterfield who obviously didn’t see a future for him in the Conference.

He didn’t score any league goals for either team yet people are saying he is going to be a goal machine next season.The only thing Dodds will improve is the laundry bill because he never gets his shorts dirty.

I remember him ripping them though, at Vale Park! They brought a new pair of shorts to him and he changed them in the Bycars goalmouth. No fannying around in those days.
