Talk of bizarre refereeing performances takes me back to a story involving local ex league official John Hilditch. Early in his career a dog ran on to the pitch and started to run with the ball. Hilditch allowed play to go on. The dog ran the ball into the net, at which point Hilditch indicated “goal” ! Beats the beach ball incident at Sunderland a few years ago by a country mile !

Major incident in La Liga tonight. Valencia v Barcelona, the top two teams. Barcelona scored because of goalkeeping error. Not given, linesman level with defensive line and therefore not the goal line. Not using goal line technology.

 

Then Valencia counter attacked whilst the Barcelona players stood round initially celebrating and protesting and nearly scored the other end.

 

Game ended 1-1, Barcelona had to come from behind.

My son refs up to U18 town and club football in Massachusetts, often in places like Brocton and Dorchester which make Chell Heath look like Mayfair.

 

Parents not knowing the rules and excitable South American coaches are an issue but he played at a high level himself so knows the rules and is physically fit so can keep up with play so he can hold his own.

Going slightly off tack, but does anyone remember local referee Arthur Eldon ? When I did my referee exam in the late 70’s, he took the course. On bit of advice I do remember him giving us was, “Always turn up smart. If you look like a bag of sh*t, they’ll expect you to referee like a bag of sh*t” ! Top man was Arthur.
