Matchday Thread: Coventry City v Port Vale

I had a dream, we were playing with 2 up front, then I woke up to a nightmare. Oh dear, where are we going? Not to Highfield Road full of high spirits as in 1958, but full of uncertainty to a rented rugby ground, how the world has changed. As to the game, will lessons have been learnt and implemented, will injured players return? I think the feeling is that a single striker needs to be fast, or if not has to have adequate service in the scoring area, otherwise Pope has to have a runner with him to work as a pair. Cov have not scored in their last 3 league games with just a point at Chesterfield, I would be tempted to give Pope a rest and go for a fast young attack, but I am not picking the team, just waiting for the tide to turn.

I'd rather go 6-4-3 might just get a 0-0 then. I wouldn't entertain playing 3 up front at all and think he'll go 1 with support from midfielders, much like yesterday but with less 'impact' if that's possible.

I suppose to a degree it depends on what kind of team Coventry are. County were a tall, strong outfit with two big units up front. I don't know how Coventry set up.

 

I'd be tempted to go something like this, in 4.4.2 formation:

 

Lainton, Wilson, Denton, Smith, Anderson/Gunning.

Four across the middle - Harness, Worrall, Middleton, Whitfield/De Freitas

Pope and Pyke with Barnett hopefully fit for the bench alongside Montano.

 

That won't be his team though.

you are right, like 95% of users on this forum, everyone knows we need two up top.

As you say though, he will keep with one up top, you would actually think hes trying to get sacked wouldnt you.

Exactly, I don't expect anymore than 200 loyal fans making the journey for this one. Another defeat and dead bottom of the Football League by 5pm next Saturday is my prediction. I was going to go but now would rather not bother after watching the last three home matches....Never felt so low supporting Port Vale.
