Newcastle Town v Vale

This last week has been great for the club.

Two batterings handed out. Young striker for the season. Many trialists and most looking good. Prices reduced.

Whatever happens next season in games, one thing for sure is that we won't just roll over for teams. Not with Brown and Morgan in charge. They have now got rid of the dead wood and are building their own team.

Obviously pre season means little and tougher tests lie ahead but as long as the owner stays out the way, we could be in for a decent season.

Very enjoyable evening apart from the foul weather. Again we need to take the quality of the opposition into account but that's two teams we've put to the sword when we did nowt close to that last season. Two clean sheets as well which is a similar improvement.

Buxton on Saturday will be a harder task but scoring goals for fun can only improve confidence.

Buxton lost 1-3 to a Crewe team tonight

Thought Gunning was decent, talker and seemingly big character, Eardley looked liked he's not trained yet, Walker decent in flashes, however it was a tetchy niggly affair first half, all in all decent work out

True about the niggling in the first half - provoked a bit by a rather over-aggressive challenge by Montano. He was lucky the ref took no action.

Absolutely, very "over zealous" challenge, the lad who swung his forearm in the back of Tom Walkers (forgive me if it was someone else) head was lucky as well.

Second half team looked more mobile than the first half, although Town made some changes and looked weaker, especially the keeper.

Eardley looked unfit but his distribution looked good. Gunning was nothing special. Walker was playing the no.10 position and looked decent on the ball, although it was very crowded in the middle first half. Whitehouse was a bit lightweight. "Monty" scored a great goal but he struggled to beat a man.

Second half looked great going forward. Pyke looked very lively and Dan Turner looked more threatening than anything in the first half. Green scored without doing much but it will take him a while to get fit. Tonge steady. French lad good on the ball but he didn't get it enough.

Encouragingly attacking football. Some great goals and better than we usually fair against them

Thought Pyke and Turner looked good second half.

Of the trialist

Centre half looked very strong, made a couple of excellent passes (Gunning?)

Right winger tried but didn't look strong enough or skilful enough, plenty of effort

No 10 lovely touch great left foot and a bit of pace .... can he play wide as I thought he might be better as a winger

Right back had one awful 5 minutes but looked useful at times (Eardley)

Second half

Right winger (Green?) Looked short on pace, more of a wide midfielder than a winger. Some decent touches, I wasn't convinced

Tongue did the holding job but I think you'd want to see him against better opposition

Left back I thought looked useful, won tackles, looked up for it and quite good going forward

Favourite moment of the night was their keeper screaming 'go ****ing right, ****'s sake' to the wall, only for the free kick to be delivered straight around their left & Pyke scoring again. Definitely left a bit red faced!

Also their number 9 in the first half completely losing it after we went 1/2 up. Overall a really good performance though, very attacking in the 2nd half (although admittedly they would have been tired). ADF's 2nd goal & Montano's were the pick of the bunch, good goals.

Slightly off topic, i remember when we annually ( and Stoke ) used to play Parkway Clayton as a pre-season game. Did Newcastle Town take them over ? There is still a club there might be Redgate Clayton i think.

I remember Les Lawrence playing at Parkway in the friendly !!

Not a glittering Vale career for big Les really.

From NT's Wiki:

The club was formed as a Sunday league club in 1964. The club as it is now emerged in 1986 following the merger of Parkway Clayton and Newcastle Town, after the original Newcastle Town ran into financial difficulties, and a year after initial merger talks had broken down
