Bradford City fire.

54 Bradford fans & 2 Lincoln fans lost their lives in the Bradford City stadium fire on 11 May 1985,a terrible day.

An overlooked tragedy in the face of Hysel and Hillsborough.

A Health and Safety issue mainly, no attempt was made to divert the blame, so did not have a long running media/legal battle. Terrible tragedy, consequently a lot of wooden stands were replaced. The Old Rec and Victoria Ground main stands were similar, paper piled up under the stand seating with smoking permitted was bound to happen one day.

I was at Norwich City when we heard about the fire. We'd sat in that stand so many times commenting on the rubbish beneath that it was hardly a shock. I remember listening to a lunchtime news broadcast on the Monday after. Apparently the emergency services thought they had found another body but when examined it turned out to be a pile of rubbish in melted black sacks. Just thinking what that must have looked like and thinking that's what the charred bodies must have looked like made my blood run cold.

Vale played at Scunny on the Friday night if my memory serves me, 3-3 draw.

So to get a new ground in me and a fellow Vale mate went Man City v Charlton pay on the day !.

47'000 gate to see City win 5-0 to go up to Division one ( Prem ) . Was only when we got in the car we found out of the horrors at Bradford, shameful that it never seems to be spoken as in the same breathe as Hillsborough really.

RIP

Wasn't there something at Preston away, not the play off game but the league game there in the same season I think.

Yes. I was stood directly over the hole where the smoke starting coming out. Luckily the crowd were quickly dispersed from the area It could have been a whole lot worse had the stand been seating.

I too was in that Preston stand for that play-off match - but it wasn't full and the fire was small, newspapers I think. I don't remember anything for the league game that season though.

Anyone who looks into the Bradford fire will find that the club owner/chairman had somehow had EIGHT fires at his previous companies.

Someone called Martin Fletcher wrote a book on it, link bwlow - and it is perhaps truly disgusting that this has not been followed up in the same way as Hillsbrough was (rightly) investigated -

Very suspicious, stretching coincidence far too far. At initial glance an insurance fraudster, why didn't the insurance companies put their heads together? I can`t believe the Valley Parade Fire was intended for during the game, but was there an investigation into a timer device that went off too soon. The actual fire to be blamed on a cast away lighted fag. Was there a TV investigation?
