Your best-ever Vale XI...

robf

Recommended Posts

Hi,

It's a bit of a quiet week so I thought I'd go back into Vale's past and remember some cracking players.

The question is - what is your best-ever Vale XI?

Some questions answered:

1. It can be any formation (to fit in your favourites)

2. You don't have to have seen all the players (see mine below)

3. Feel free to give reasons and also name subs if you can't fit them all in.

So, to kick-off, here's mine in 4-4-2...

GK: Ray King (never saw but because of his Steele Curtain exploits and England B cap)

RB: Simon Mills

CB: Roy Sproson (again sadly never saw but can't leave Mr Port Vale out)

CB: Dean Glover (just edges out Aspo because he was so classy)

LB: Darren Hughes

RW: Gareth Ainsworth/Jon McCarthy (genuinely can't split 'em)

CM: Ray Walker (Walker's elegance compliments Earle's energy)

CM: Robbie Earle (ditto)

LW: Steve Guppy

FW: Martin Foyle (for his link-up play and goals)

FW: Andy Jones (especially in his 1986-87 form)

Subs:

GK: Mark Goodlad (best keeper I have seen)

DF: Neil Aspin (could cover any of the defensive positions)

RW: Whichever of McCarthy/Ainsworth doesn't start

MF: Andy Porter

MF: Ian Taylor

FW: Tony Naylor

FW: Wilf Kirkham (couldn't leave that club legend out either)

Anyone got any others...

Always interesting to speculate and reminisce. But too many for me to remember. I'd perhaps need 3-4 teams to fit everyone in that I loved and admired.

My personal favourite XI is probably something like this-

1. Stuart Sharratt

2. Clinton Boulton

3. Ron Wilson

4. Neil Aspin

5. Roy Sproson

6. John Green

7. Tommy McLaren

8. Robin Van der Laan

9. John James

10. Andy Jones

11. Steve Guppy

The best team? It has to be the 53-54 side en bloc perhaps but of the ones I've seen, how about -

1. Hancock

2. Aspin

3. Hughes/Tankard

4. Taylor

5. Sproson

6. Glover

7. Earle

8. Leake

9. Foyle

10. Steele

11. Poole

Not much width in that team!

My father used to tell me about Bob Blood. He scored 44 in 53 appearances way back in the early twenties. He had a cannonball shot and once broke a keeper's hand when the latter had the temerity to save one of his ferocious penalties.

My regret is that I never saw the 53-54 team, nor the 58-59 one (I think it was) that won the newly formed Fourth Division and scored about 110 goals in the process, but I live in hope.

Musselwhite

Mills

Tankard

Walker

Aspin

Glover

McCarthy

Earle

Foyle

It could probably do with an Andy Porter in there for balance but who do you leave out for him? So I guess he'd be on the bench.

Classic 90s bench. Three subs: Porter, Naylor and Andy Hill

I find it difficult to disagree with your selection except maybe to swop Aspo for John Nicholson.

Love the centre forward! I can't see a lot to disagree with in that team pal.
