Matchday thread: Port Vale v Southend Utd

How do you know that? You didn't go. As has been pointed out on here, you can't rely on what is said on the radio. I don't understand a Vale fan not going the first home game (circumstances permitting of course) - great chance to have a first "proper" look at the newbies. I saw 9 players for the first time today. I thought it was a decent second half and we grew in to the game. Looked solid at the back but a bit short up top. Thought Forrester did quite well. I was very worried that the new signings would struggle but am encouraged after today - I for one am glad i went! People wanted Page gone (I think he did well in the circumstances) and the "deadwood" out - you've certainly got that, and yet still it's moan, moan, moan on here.

all the moan moan moaner's should join ray williams on the radio, his commentary was embarrassing today, describing us in the first half as just a bunch of 'foreigners' then second half decided to say it looks like a team coming together, it's all good having an opinion, but these negative opinions dont apply today im sorry to say.

I would have said that summed it up pretty accurately.

OK here goes the first half was dire and we scored a beautiful goal which the game in truth didn't really deserve. Goals change games and most fans opinions though and so the team got clapped off instead of a chorus of boos.

The second half was better but we still rode our luck when Southend hit the post and the ball rolled along the goal line with the away fans claiming it had crossed the line. The second goal a good strike from Streete killed the game.

Over all 3 good points but the result must be measured against the opposition who to me look like relegation fodder on that showing.

It is far too early to make any assumptions.

your opinion on southend is that they are relegation fodder oldsage, if weve potentially beat relegation fodder what do you make us to be so far on the two *league* showings?

baring in mind we drew with one of the more favourable promotion favourites bradford, sheff utd have started woefully and charlton look dreadful so far.

I made the right decision not going today and fair play only listened to it on radio but the game sounded dire and the atmos was none existent all you could here were individual people talking to eachother didn't sound at all like a football match going on so would I want spent £23 for that? of course not but back on topic I'm happy Vale ground the result out but we really have to improve.

Saddo,

We don't need to hear from so called armchair fans like you.

To be quite honest most of us enjoyed a nice day out watching good football and we actually won.

How can you comment on a game you havnt seen and can't be ar*sed to attend. It's people like you who are holding Port Vale back by not paying to attend games. Considering the big changes from last year I couldn't wait to see today's game.

But Billie no mates like you can't see the wood from the trees.

Another clean sheet and some nice football. Much better second half after a shaky opening.

Forrester, Knops and Tavares were all good in my eyes. Foley on another level. De Freitas came on and looked lively.

Full backs are overrated.

They were poor but you can't knock 4 points from 6 with 2 clean sheets. Good stuff.

Dont agree,i think Knops has been excellent

On Tuesday i would have Forester in for Cicillia whi is injured anyway and De Freitas on the left instead of Thomas

Early days, I enjoyed the goals, and we coped quite well against a bunch of thugs who will struggle if that is all they can offer. Spent far less time than less season passing the ball sideways, a good period of showboating in front of the Paddock towards the end, and signs of progress, hopefully we can build.

Really happy to have bagged 3 points today and overall we deserved them. However, anyone who thinks the first half performance was better than abysmal wants sectioning. 10 seconds of good play from Foley and an excellent finish from Forrester were the difference between being clapped off and booed off.

Thought Hooper was wasted on the wing and Thomas still looks short of match fitness. Defensively strong and most grew into the game as it went on.

Southend a vile niggling side who were very lucky to finish with 11 men.

I think we are capable of good counter attacking football and have a solid defence but our attacking play in the first half reflects being a new team. I guess we have 6 defenders / defensive players and 4 committed to attacking, so that is what is happening on the pitch. I think on the Vale Pitch, which is big, Southend were able to play round and through on occasions but there was good last ditch defending and goalkeeping. I think Bruno looks a good manager to me. He had the team supremely well organized at Bradford last weekend in what was a really difficult opening day game in this league. He is savvy enough to realize that to start with, until the team settles and learns his way and gets used to playing together, the back door must be shut. It helps that we have better centre halves this year. I worry that we are being watched and we need to improve because of that quickly. I mean a team will come with a plan well thought out to defeat our game plan and one way would be to get the tricky wingers out and target the centre halves we have at fullback on the deck.

I agree to some extent. We could say the say about the game at Bradford last week because they had the ball 65-70% of the game, but when we count chances on target PV were close and nearly won the game at the end. i think we were disrupted by our Centre forward going off and needed half time to reconfigure as well. The counter attack goal was excellent. They came close to scoring in a spell of sustained pressure but goalie did well and we defended the box well. Then the breakaway was just brilliant.

Reading back my comment I realise how it comes across!

What I meant to say was that the idea of full-backs are overrated, referring to the centre halves we are currently playing at rb and lb.

A well worked victory, after a nervous and uninspiring, cautious start. I'd guess that the players knew how important it was to get off to a good start at home and this had an effect in the first half-hour.

The valuable win should help build confidence though, and even though it will probably be a season with some setbacks and learning curves, these are exciting times. The history of Port Vale will look back at this season as a defining time, and I really can't understand how one or two fans on here can say they didn't go for fear of boredom.

The gate on tuesday will be interesting, we should get 4500 really, but I suspect it will be nearer the 4000 mark as less fans go in midweek, though a warm evening is forecast.

Chance to take an early place in the top three - let's hope we can beat Rochdale and really build the buzz.
