Port Vale 3 Chesterfield 2, post match comments

AGREED it was a much needed good result even if we had to hang on after we swapped a proper goalkeeper for "calamity chris" neal and played with effectively no keeper for a key period. Still the manager thinks hes good as he said in his post match P+G INTERVEIW along with a load of other spin about players professionalism paying for there own accomodation after the cup game on thurs when it was a lack of proffesionalism that caused the replay in the first place imho

This either a wind up or you need help.

Great to get two wins and into the next round of the cup, albeit against three poor sides.

I thought Dodds was fantastic (as he was on Thursday) and his harassment of their back for, and in particular, Morsy meant he had to drop deep and pass sideways giving our midfield space to run into.

The pitch was a joke and it was like we either wanted the game off or a poor pitch to stop them passing it.

Why they put O'shea out wide and even at right back at the end baffles me. I always thought we should've signed him as he was the only thing Gannon did right. He's a number 10. Great feet.

Kelly, great goal and assist. Then just stopped. Suffers from Rob Taylor-itis. Runs at people and expects them to move out the way. Stopped tracking back and this allowed them to get at us. Should've been subbed earlier.

Good to see AJay scoring but we do need someone to hold it up more.

Mcgivern's clearing header was woeful but did play fairly well after that. Both him and Duffy lose there man too often as evidenced by their first and the missed ebanks chance.

Also the lad who scored the second was at Newcastle college. Why are we not signing these kind of players off our doorstep? I've known about him for a few years and was told he was quality, how come our academy is missing them?

I still think we are conceding too many.

Maybe he should be focusing on the next game now mate. Too much moaning in football.

Maybe they were and they certainly had more of the ball ,we won who cares what he thinks, we played on Thurs did he forget that it was a monumental effort

But we defended a lot better, and more, than they did. Great achievement to be fit after Thurs night, thanks to staying overnight and loosening up down there before the coach trip back. Benefits of a fitness coach?

But it is the part-time supporters (but full time fans) that swell the crowds. For various reasons people do not attend every game, and many could not do so if even if we were in the Prem (New fans would appear then). All that can happen is that they attend more games, and as you say some cup excitement, maybe the POs is looking closer than a few weeks ago, only time will tell.

Judging by the queue of cars trying to get into Wolstanton M&S/Asda I'd say most of Stoke on Trent were there yesterday!

To be fair to McGivern when you look at the goal again, the cross flicks off another head just before reaches him making it more of a reactive header. Hopefully he'll learn from it. He is definitely improving though.

Little piece on us in the BBC's Football League news round up.

42 hours later

It's never easy to play on a Thursday and a Sunday, according to any manager of a team that has been involved in the Europa League.

Well, what about a Thursday and a Saturday?

You could have forgiven Port Vale for making a slow start to their game against Chesterfield on Saturday, given they were playing an FA Cup first-round replay at non-league Maidenhead just 42 hours earlier.

But Rob Page's men made light of their lack of downtime by taking the lead inside six minutes and making it 2-1 after just 10.

The rapid-fire scoring slowed down after that but a second-half goal from Louis Dodds saw them hold out for a 3-2 win in League One.

After three goals in the opening 10 minutes the Port Vale Twitter account lamented the end of the goal rush.

Excellent couple of results showing really good professionalism. I thought McGivern got the clearance going towards a safer place than others available given he could not get power on the header. But it was unlucky it dropped to a Chesterfield player and our keeper was out of position because he was covering the original cross in the centre of the goal.

Hope the vlf sorted them out.

What a ****** silly thing to say. Everyone should be welcome to watch a FOOTBALL MATCH. I don't care who they are or who they support. Come and watch the game in peace and enjoy FOOTBALL. I have absolutely no patience for **** like this at a football match.
