Goal Line Technology

Yes, that old chestnut....

Michel Platini says that goal line technology is "too expensive" for the Champions League. He would rather money was spent on youth football.

Is he seriously expecting us to believe that?

Platini is an ar****le (Qatar world cup a prime example of his expertise) so this is unprecedented... I actually agree with a Frenchman: but not for the reason stated.

All part of the game.

IMHO the game should be the same, whether it is played at the Sandhole in Halls Rd or the Maracana.

Any technology that helps the game should be used and goal line technology is certainly one that should be used.
I disagree, the controversy in football is what keeps us interested, blokes have been debating in the pub for years about refs good and bad decisions for years, do we want to end a good old whinge about the ref?

We would still whinge about refs on such things as pens given/ not given, bad tackles going unpunished, goals disallowed for offside etc, etc. But when a ball has clearly crossed the line, [ in one case rebounded off the BACK of the net and out again] and not given is just wrong in this day and age. Remember a goal not given at old trafford, which had crossed the line and resulted in Man u going out of the champions league, that wrong decision probably cost utd 50 million.

He may have an issue in the early stages of the competition where teams from poorer countries and small leagues are involved. They may need the technology for 1-3 games at home and then be unable to use it again for a season or ever.

I think this is part of the resistance to technology in football. There is a desire for the rules to be the same at all levels and clearly technology cannot be afforded or managed at many levels of football or in many geographical areas of the world. However, I feel he lacks pragmatism on this and it is clear that his goal line people, even when doing nothing else, have no chance of calling a close goal line ball crossed / not crossed incident on a single viewing without replay. This technology is the way forward in the highest level tournaments and competitions where it can be afforded.

UEFA / FIFA are building up perhaps for a major clash re Quatar and the world cup. This may have been awarded corruptly to Quatar on the false representation that the competition would be in Summer. Now they are possibly going to try to disrupt three seasons of professional football round the world to play in Winter. If they do the clash with the clubs will see UEFA and FIFA terminated as overseers of the professional game.

You're not changing the rules just aiding the rules to be kept, no different to the fact that the better referees referee at a higher level. I would not begrudge if the premiership had it and the lower divisions did not because of cost. Remember Tony Naylors goal at home to QPR not being given even though it was 4ft over the line, we ended up drawing the game and just missing Out on the play offs. If it helps the game to have the right decisions then it should be used.

Really? So should we use jumpers for goalposts in the next World Cup?

If your clumsy comment was in reference to my assertion was that the game should essentially be the same at all competitive levels, then I make no apology; that's my opinion. The referee's decision (assisted by what used to be called linesmen) is final, whether it be a Leek and District match or Champions' League.

For the record the Sandhole in Halls Rd, Gillow Heath has two full size pitches, albeit a bit sandy, posts, crossbars and (if you have some duck tape available) even nets; and if you are really lucky not too much dog s***!.

Jumpers not required.

I welcome this technology.

It does not change the rules. It does not stop the flow of the game. It is an aid to the referee to ensure he gets one important decision correct all of the time. What's the problem with it?

Totally agree. Lampard's "goal" vs Germany was the tipping point for me. None of use a chisel and a piece of slate to write these days.
