Summer transfer rumours and speculation

I'd like to see that sort of approach. If the club see potential in young Arron Davies then I would hope for a loan (or loans) out this season. The ideal signing would then be someone in his mid-twenties with potential who can challenge Amos and potentially become number one (with potentially Davies then moving up to understudy).

I wonder what they thought of Nathan Broome? He obviously didn't get a chance (bar one Trophy game) but he fits that sort of profile - aged 23 with experience? He's got a year left on his contract but Vale are not adverse to a fee if they think it's the right signing.

Broome was quite poor in the EFL trophy game that he played. Not good enough by a long stretch based on that performance.

Might be on my own here but I’d like a first team keeper to sign. I think Amos is very average and there are much better out there. I’d be looking at the Burton keeper personally.

I agree about Amos who hasn’t proved himself just yet

and we need a new striker alongside Stockle’ a fox in the box

I'm really not getting this nervousness surrounding Amos.

Since he came into the first team, he played 23 games and conceded 22 goals. He (and Smith) steadied what was fast becoming a very shaky defence.

He also played in pressure games such as Salford, Crewe, Bradford, Notts County, Walsall, Doncaster, Grimsby and Wimbledon. Vale won all bar Grimsby and only conceded 6 goals.

I think it's only a couple of people who say we need a new number 1 to be fair

Personally I felt there was a fair few goals that went in that were pretty comfortable saves. Maybe not massive errors (tranmere aside) just shots I think he should do better with. He’s a much calmer keeper than Ripley which considerably helped us, but for me we need a better keeper for number 1 and I’m convinced Moore will sign one

To be fair he hasn't unproven himself either, he made an error at Barrow in the cup and at Tranmere but otherwise has been pretty solid and statistically we conceded no more or less per game than Ripley.

I wouldn't have any issues if he is number 1 next season.

I agree. He is a good keeper. What he needs is decent competition and I do wonder why so many keepers we have had recently have only ever regressed and not really made improvements while time has passed at the club.

Yeah I think longer term we will want to improve on that position and needs competition to keep it going, as I said a few weeks ago we ideally need to bring a new keeper in but if Amos proves himself as number 1 over a new keeper then fair enough.

Ben Amos played 319 games in which the majority of them have been in the either the championship or league one.

The season just gone is the first time in his career that he’s dropped down to League 2.

You are really doing him a dis justice

Absolutely not, reality is reality, he played 2nd fiddle to ripley for a reason, aiden stone played alot of games during the end of our last promotion season and kept a clean sheet in our playoff wembley finale, he was dumped by notts and now hes now in non league. Just because we got promoted with amos doesnt mean hes rolled back the years or got better.

Doesnt matter what hes done in the past its where is he now and his ability, he was rusty when ripley left and hes played to his peak. I get nervous when hes left 1 on 1 with players.

I don't see the issue with Amos and would rather a big wage was saved (no pun intended) and spent in other areas.

However, I do think Vale will bring in a number one and Amos will drop back to the bench.

Would be useful if we had DMs priority list for positions, also depends who wants to come here and how the budget is allocated. Whether a goal keeper is a priority who knows.

If we want to sit around mid table we should stick with Amos, if we want to progress past league 1 we need someone better. A top end league 1/championship keeper could be the difference between winning and losing games. Think of all the times 1 goal in the last 10 minutes has taken away the win.

If we want to be competing for a play off spot we need

1 Decent keeper

2 solid centre backs

1 decent striker

Possibly 1 midfielder

Plus loans

That's the best way without pissing cash up the wall
