Absolutely not, reality is reality, he played 2nd fiddle to ripley for a reason, aiden stone played alot of games during the end of our last promotion season and kept a clean sheet in our playoff wembley finale, he was dumped by notts and now hes now in non league. Just because we got promoted with amos doesnt mean hes rolled back the years or got better.

Doesnt matter what hes done in the past its where is he now and his ability, he was rusty when ripley left and hes played to his peak. I get nervous when hes left 1 on 1 with players.

I think you ve every right to be nervous if a player is 1 on 1 with our keeper it means he s clean through with a fairly strong chance of scoring.

its easy to spend other people’s money… if keeping Amos meant we could offer a cracking forward 40% more money and tempt him to join them i d keep Amos and sign a back up keeper.

By comparison though personally I didn’t think Stone was good enough even when in league 2, which Clarke obviously agreed with since he brought Holy in. Problem was Stone was best of a crap bunch of keepers.

Amos isn’t some top tier keeper like we’ve had in the past with Alnwick, but he’s steady enough and I’m comfortable enough with him in league 1. I do accept that an upgrade is possible though. Just think other areas are more of a priority, such as centre halves.

If we want to be going for the play offs then we need a better keeper. League 1 is a different kettle of fish to league 2.

Ben Amos won league One in 21/22 didn’t he? Played 35 of the 46 league games that season.

That was 3 years ago. Look at Ben foster and Wrexham. He was playing in the prem and championship 3 years before then he went Wrexham had a few good seasons and couldn't handle league 2. We need a decent young keeper that will last. Amos doesn't have long left.

Whilst I agree that if we want to progress long term, we'll need an upgrade on Amos, I think in the short term he is steady enough and there are much more pressing needs for our budget.

Personally as I put earlier I think we will go with Amos as number 1 for the start of the season at least and bring in a 23/24 year old to eventually be nurtured to take his place

Ironic considering that applies to pretty much every post you do on here. Great counter argument though, well thought out 👍

Foster was playing in the Prem at 39, Amos has a couple of seasons easily if he keeps injury free. Foster was only stop-gap/mentor at Wrexham, retired after 4 games in L2 at 40 hardly preparation for L1.

Past his prime at 35 but as GK he's hardly for the knackers yard!

I know what you're saying but not the best example. Ben Foster is 42 according to wiki so when he played in the PL he would have been 35 and played in the Champ at 38😀

Amos has 12 months left on his contact -we will obviously bring another GK, the question is do you pay a lot of money in wages to attract a top tier player or a younger player to push Amos and hopefully force his way into the team during the season, then you'd have the luxury of continuity  keeping Amos as nb. 2, if he was happy with that role.

This

Surely to God nobody is expecting us to be challenging the top end next season?

For me, I'd rather spend the serious cash on the outfield, continue with Ben Amos and get a potential challenger in.

And then build again next season when we've hopefully established ourselves and invest in a keeper then maybe.
