The better players get signed up reasonably early in the window. Hope we sign some decent ones reasonably early. 🤞

It's all about persuasion and money, Vale have to get on this train big time as the cub cant afford to have an unbalanced squad again next season else the trap door awaits.

The club have to sign two strikers capable of  scoring 10+ goals next season as goals have to be scored to win games and get 3 points.

The club needs a wealthy benefactor to help out the Shanahans', anyone got a spare few million? Where are you Mr Williams.....Not you Ray.

Already had several options up top as well - maybe leave someone surplus to requirements who's worth taking?

Wouldn’t it be a refreshing change  though to actually sign a quality player early in the window mainly a striker and beat other clubs to their signature.

It would naturally build momentum with the club and fans, build a buzz for the new upcoming season and even maybe sell a few more season tickets.

It would be good and as you say build momentum, but this is Vale and fans have learnt not to expect early signings and the recruitment team tend to shop at the 1p shop or don't bother recruiting positions the fans can see needs urgently recruiting.  🤣

A poster said DM and Co on holiday this week (hope they took their phones with them) - so hopefully we will see some action next week maybe.

I 100% agree let ikpaezo go and get to the end of lofts and jones contracts and let them be released as they will bleed the vclub dry and teams like Mansfield, already promoted are buying players

Certainly if it wasn't for the January disaster we probably would have stayed up. Madden (35 duing next season) and Gregory (36 in August) have both been good and very good forwards in the latter's case. Whether they will still be good forwards next season is much more questionable.  Modern football forwards (and centrehalves) are much more involved in general play. Forwards quite often drop off a cliff in their early 30s in terms of goal output.

The Askey vain pursuit of Maynard did turn out to be a blessing. He scored 6 goals in his last 2 seasons of league football. As the pursuit dragged on I said the club should be shifting target to someone like Joe Ironside who was younger, probably cheaper, available but less technically accomplished. He scored 14 in each of the next 2 seasons. We probably should have looked at Ironside again last summer because he is at least a decent lower end league 2 striker, who would have scored more goals than the 3 we ended up with combined. Whether Mansfield and Chesterfield have recruited well won't be know until December.  In both cases there is ever chance they have signed players on large wages who have gone a season too far in their careers.

We can't release any player from a fixed term contract. Loft and Jones either stay, we pay them up out of the playing budget, or the owners pay them out of their own pocket. I guess fans could have a whip around but I doubt that would raise 75k for Jones or 150k for Loft. I suspect we will end up subsidising moves elsewhere, although that will reduce finances for replacements. We may end up keeping both. If a club only offers Loft 50k, we have to pay 100k we are unlikely to get a reasonable league 2 striker with the remaing 50k we save.

Vale fans have this bizarre obsession for a "proven goalscorer". But as you say, Maynard was a "proven goalscorer" and scored 6 goals in the last two years.

Dom Telford was another "proven goalscorer" and scored 4 goals last season.

Yet players like Danilo Orsi have gone from 5 league goals in two years, to scoring 19 this season! Same for Will Evans, 2 league goals last season, 21 goals this season.

I think the sweet spot is signing someone that's scored a modest amount (8-12 goals) but where we think they will suit our style of play and kick on again. We don't need to gamble the budget on a "proven goalscorer"!

One thing for sure is that those signings will have got the fans excited. Meanwhile we have Uche who is probably on similar wages to those two. Agree re Ironside
