Sports Science

This is a one sided debate in that we see the consequences of sports science when we follow it, make subs and lose a game.

The truth is the upsides are less obvious in that we'll never applaud a player remaining injury free as that's the norm or the expectation.

Having said that I do agree it can feel we are too tilted towards the science. If that whole approach is managing the risks of injury, we should also balance that by pushing it at the margins to win games.

If a player is clattered or over-stretches and cant run it off, who makes that decision?

The sports science should be applied Monday to Friday to make sure the players are in the best condition they can be, i.e. doing whats best for each individual; high/low intensity, more recovery time, etc.

Come match day, you're either fit to play or you're not.

You may not be fully match fit (i.e. lacking in game time) and might start blowing 2nd half but base any decision on how that player is or isn't influencing the game.

When sports science starts interfering in match-day decisions its gone too far and becomes counterproductive to the overall aim of the club, which is winning football matches.

This hits the nail on the head mate. End of thread emoji108.pngemoji106.png

Or is it that the science isn’t flawed but the interpretation of it, by non-scientists, is? For all we know the scientific data could have pointed to Gav, Alfie and Ollie not being fit to start, fit only to play 30 minutes or fit enough for 45, 62 or 96 minutes.  Ultimately it’s the manager who decides how to use the data.

Grief this part of the thread’s beginning to sound like the COVID inquiry 😬

There's things that are far more important than Science if you want a winning football team.

Team work, spirit, guts, resilience, motivation, confidence, ambition, etc...

Players like Porter and Aspin would play through the pain barrier. Micky Cummings would have his shoulder popped back in and carry on playing...

This sport science business is beginning to become a bit of a joke, last season it was Vale Park where hundreds of footballers have played without a problem causing injuries , now the latest excuse is the training pitch Christ the next thing is there is too much tarmac on the car park....a puff of of wind and they're over..

Absolutely Steve. We seem to forget that most of these guys are full-time professionals and aged between 18-35. Too much information can be as bad as ignorance. "Nicey-nicey" cautious as we go gets you knocked out of cup matches at 2-0 and will get you relegated. The human race hasn't changed much in the last 10-20 years, bull**** excuses and theries have. Not against science but surely the data is purely that  - DATA. My science is numbers and I can predict that there will likely be a drop of 30-40% in Vale fans attending in the coming weeks/ months. It's OK because the lads aren't "red-lining" though.

Sports science is important. I don't think our players are strong enough. I formed that conclusion after the Derby game. They just pinged our players around.

I think our players are OK at running. I'm not seeing them gas late in games. But I'm not seeing them be exceptionally fit either.

Crosby makes many poor substitutions between 60-75 mins. He also makes poor tactical changes in the last third of games. When it's everyman behind the ball, this can just be his instinct. Or it can be he is also too obsessed with data on a computer.
