Did you watch the series about Freddie Flintoff turning a group of kids from disadvantaged backgrounds into a cricket team? If not, you should. That is management at it's best.

Don't know how relevant this is, but DC came from a disadvantaged background.

I can't imagine he was a yes man.

Different situation, DC is dealing with adults in a professional environment, expected to perform above his means.

There are just 7 days until the new season kicks off. Agents will start to get twitchy, players will be putting pressure on their agents and having more realistic expectations. Signings will surely follow. I'm not saying that we will get 5 or 6 in, but 2 or 3 will be added by the time the Cod's land in town.

Funny that RZ, I watched that and thought Freddie Flintoff followed by a film Crewe managing a bunch of kids who had been selected to appear ons a TV series was exactly like managing a squad of football professionals.

I was surprised not to see McKirdy as opening batsman.

You don't win in competitive football with either DHeads undermining the collective effort, or a group entirely made up of compliant yes-men. A united squad does not mean the latter, as Port Vale showed last year.

Our best team contained three players that were at the club the previous season, so I'd say that suggests Clarke/Flitcroft know a thing or two about bringing together good players and characters.

What did you think of Micky Adams as a manager RZ?

The other issue that is slightly concerning is that anyone who is a free agent now isn’t going to have had a proper pre-season and so match fit and open to injury in the competitive stuff.

They will be weeks away from match fitness, I’m assuming given the time that we won’t sign any free agents now. Hoping for 6/7 signings with 5 permanent. Don’t want a squad full of loans

Some great points there as it’s detailed spot on
Personally our club if it wants to succeed and be an established league one side that hopes to get into the championship one day then we have to break our wage structure at some point ?
I’d probably say that we ain’t offering anything more than £3,500 a week at Port Vale so far, so unfortunately we’re going to have to upset our dressing room weather it’s this season or in two seasons time, we can’t keep running on a certain level of budget and expect miracles to happen. There’s clubs in league two that are currently beating us to players at the same time. I know we have a plan in place and we offer and family network at the club, but a player from the outside doesn’t know or see this when he’s negotiating the next two or three years of his career wages.
So as follows…
1. Sign players of a lower quality to get numbers in?
Big No No

2. Break the wage structure and pay what players are demanding and then suffer the consequences?
This has to happen one day

3. Hold out for quality players and hope their wage demands fall within our budget?
Very risky business as you may be without and full 25 man squad until after Christmas

4. Sign d*ckheads who could upset the camp?
No chance, but normally a is a quality player on massive money so not in our reach anyway
Something has to give one way or the other, because so far we are getting left behind and this worries me very much.
I agree that none of the options are ideal, Ive had a constant headache for weeks stressing about it.

God only knows how DC and DF are feeling.

The only thing that's keeping me relatively calm is I believe that the management team know what they are doing and the best interests of the club at heart and that's the first time I can say that in along time.

Fingers crossed it all works out.

KTF

So Freddie is a genius for moulding a group of kids into a cricket team, but Darrell isn’t for moulding a group of footballers from here there and everywhere into a promotion winning team in his first season (his fifth promotion). It’s time you gave him some credit. We may well have differing views, but can you back up your reason with some substance.
