Match thread: Kidsgrove v Port Vale

Encouraging performance even taking into account the nature of the opposition - we were pants against Kidsgrove last year. Barnett scored two very nice goals before going off with an ice pack attached to his bottom! Tongue looked like he was playing in his carpet slippers but he really needs some Grecian 2000. In the second half team, Pyke took his goals extremely well and Montano looked a real handful. Best of the trialists was Billy Whitehouse who has been released by Leeds. He was a real handful on the right wing and set up one of the goals with a beautiful chipped cross.

Sadly, a couple of Vale fans disgraced themselves by fighting. There is an area between the two sections of seats on the main side which is clearly marked with yellow hatching and signs telling folk not to stand there. Some of the Vale fans seemed unable to read this and were constantly being asked to move by those in the seats whose view they were totally blocking. Eventually, a couple decided to thump each other and it all got a bit unpleasant for a while. Needless to say this was the section of the ground that was nearest to the bar. It's the usual simple equation: blokes with no brains + ale = trouble. It was a real shame because it cast a damper on a very good day.

Sounds like a very satisfactory afternoon, not getting carried away yet but some very promising posts on here and news from elsewhere.

Special thanks to Dave Valiant for the news that we came back from 0-2 to win 4-3 at Congleton in the 'young uns' match, I was having trouble finding that result. Excellent news from there too.

It is slightly tainted by the injury to Tyrone Barnett who it seems started like a train, but good wishes to him on a speedy recovery and hopefully he will be back scoring more goals for us before too long.

No bickering and back-biting on the Smurf / Brown / signings today, let's all enjoy the 2 wins and, although as I said it is very early days, it does look like Vale are preparing well and could surprise a few people in the new season.

Anyone fancying a flutter can get 3/1 at Skybet against Vale finishing in the Top 7, or an even better bet of 11/10 against a top half finish, the latter seems a very decent bet to me, though I don't like this kind of bet much as you are giving the bookie your money for 9 months, a long wait to get any winnings.

So are you saying that he shouldnt be signed

Sent from my LG-H340n using the onevalefan mobile app

If I was, I'd have said that. I just know that some on here tend to go ott on the basis of 1 game against part time footballers. If he scores/plays well against league opposition more than once then if he's available, yes

Great to hear.

I do think it's a clean slate for Brown. He will want to impose his style and influence fully over the summer. He strikes me as a Micky Adams style of manager. No nonsense who will demand performances or consequences will happen.

I really hope he gets the success his qualities as a player and a man deserve.

Yep, Ex-Pro's don't always make good managers but if there is an ex-pro who has a good chance of making a manager I'd say it's Michael Brown based on his never say die playing style, his experience, determination and will to win and from his interviews he seems a decent, thoughtful guy. Just needs to show he can spot a player and blend a team together.

As an aside and I know it's only one game and it's Kidsgrove but Christian Montano seems an exciting player, if he does come good he will get bums on seats at VP.

By that time someone else would probably have picked him up.

Jonathan Wilkes has been in touch with his pal Paddy McGuinness, celebrity type. Old man used to have a big yard full of battered motors down Longport end. Anyhow, Tuesday morning at 9:30am the young Huddersfield striker is to be put through his paces in front of these two esteemed celeb judges, with Speedy the club gardener bloke making up the firing squad. Guess it will be down to no lighty, no Pykey as to whether the kid stays in Burslem.
