Fair enough if you think he's too old. If you rate Neal a better keeper than one of the best ever Premier League keepers and an international who has played with some distinction at the Euros and World Cups then you are living in a different galaxy. How far father time has caught up with him I've no idea but at his peak he was one of the top goalkeepers in world football. Would be very surprised if he signs as it sounds like he fancies a tilt at the Championship and I suspect Neal is cheaper. You'd guess he currently earns significantly more than our entire budget.

 

I was talking about Williams if you read the thread I quoted.

 

I'd take Given but I doubt that will happen given his comments in the article I put a link up on.

Williams is a decent lower league keeper, although I'd have a slight preference for Neal.

 

What makes everyone think Neal would jump at the chance of coming back ? He knows we still have the same owner, and in any case he is under contract for another year.

On a serious note Jim Arnold was at a similar stage in his career when we signed him and had a great season. The days when top flight players dropped down to division 4 for a season or 2 seem long over. A Brown, Futcher, Greenhoff, Hazel were all important players at various times. M Brown was a bit of an exception but most top flight players seem to just not want to carry on. If Given walked in to Vale Park he'd probably think 50 grand was ok money ... until he realised it was for the whole year!

Excellent post that, I think he seems just very keen to keep playing and feel the buzz. Maybe but I doubt it.

Vale fan, lives local, coaches local amateur teams, has friends and socialises locally, didn't have to move house or disrupt family. Chose to leave Vale himself, and was not released a Neal was. Strong character to cope with owners slurs when he left.

 

Just a few of the things that apply to Pope (who I am very glad to see back) and maybe not to Neal (perhaps some do, but nowhere near all).
