Matchday Thread: Gillingham v Port Vale

Try Gibbons, the youngsters might have a longer concentration span than Purkiss. He just switches off and that is not acceptable as a team captain as well. He knows he messed up, but the team tried really hard and he cost them.

Correct. But he will be leading the team out yet again next week. Totally wrong message to be sending out, particularly to the younger players.

Just feel for the rest of the team that tried hard today and gave everything.

Purkiss needs to be talked to Brown about his switching off, not marking players and giving the ball away cheaply. He is costing us badly and it is not just one game. It seems to be on a regular basis and just lets the team down.

But hay he will be leading us out next week and nothing will be said to him. This is now becoming a serious problem and will see us go down.

Well yes dissapointing however I would have taken a point before the game. The stats look good and the reports suggest we deserved to have won. The cruel fact is when you are down nothing goes for you, we need to keep battling and scrapping for every point. Hats off to the traveling Valiants at least they have something to bring home unlike some of the dire away performances. If we can keep playing like this then the results will come.

May be if Brown wont sought Purkiss out and explain that he needs to concentrate for all of the match, then the rest of the team might want to have a quiet word with him. He is letting them all down. Once or twice you can forgive at this level, but it seems to be every week now.

Still think an experienced manager on 1st Jan was the way to go. Not knocking Brown, he's doing the best he can in chaotic circumstances, but an old head who's been in a scrap before might have helped us grind out wins in games like today.

You cant blame any manager for a last gasp loss of concentration, once over the white line blah blah blah.

Brown can't be blamed as such, though his persistence in picking Purkiss is baffling. Things like that will be a measure of what type of manager he will be. So far, performances have generally improved, and we should have got all 3 points today (from what I heard), and you can't directly blame Brown for an experienced pro like Purkiss switching off yet again, but if he continues to pick him, then serious questions need to be asked.
