I'm just curious as these release clauses seem pointless if a buying club just starts at a low figure and steadily increases it until the trigger amount is reached.

Do they only have a max number of goes? Of course they could bid over the money. As I said, how do you prove who made the figure known?

There's obvious ways round it. Just have to look at the arsenal bid for Suarez, how could they possibly have known than Liverpool only had to inform him of bids OVER 40 million?

 

It's either not enforced at all, or there's loopholes whereby a club rings an agent and says would a £X bid be enough?

It may not be the same for the Alnwick transfer, but there has been an interesting development regarding the Matty Taylor move to Bristol City. Bristol Rovers are to make an official complaint because they believe that Bristol City knew what the release clause amount was.
