Option for DOF or similar role

For me the Director of Football should be the person who is responsible and is the manager of the 1st team, the person who sets the tactics and picks the 1st team. Everything football should flow down from him.

The club should employ a "Football Recruiter" who reports to the DoF/Manager and the DoF/Manager tells the "Football Recruiter" who he wants the club to sign and the "Football Recruiter" goes out and signs players. This "Football Recruiter" may or may not be a football person but should be very skilled in the arts of negotiation and persuasion.

The DoF/Manager has the usual coaches and staff reporting to him.

So in Vale's current set up, Darren Moore would be the DoF/Manager and be part of the Board of Directors that runs the club. Vale would look to recruit a "Football Recruiter" to report to Darren Moore.

The DoF needs to be a football man, Knows football, the Football Recruiter needs to have other skill sets.

Could imagine the likes of Phil Sproson (Not that he'd be interested) or Colin Garlick  fulfilling the "Football Recruiter" role.

All the top clubs have dofs. As far as I'm aware back in the old days the manager would send scouts out for players that would fit the squad. It sounds good but top clubs have had a dof since the 2000s. I'm open to the idea because Darren has worked at top clubs and knows how things should be run. Maybe have Darren incharge of everything to do with the team and how we play and then have someone else for off pitch like new developments etc. I'm open to anything.

My tongue in cheek reference to Colin Garlick seems to have got some folk quite exercised. Whilst it was tongue in cheek because I don't know if Colin is either available or interested given the way he was unceremoniously elbowed out, I don't think it totally unrealistic to have an administrator rather than a "football person" running things. An administrator like a manager does not require an intimate knowledge of the process, merely the ability to manage those that do.

Can someone tell me why we should consider Foyle, apart from being an ex-player/manager?

Examples of him unearthing gems etc?

Seems like no-one can answer my very simple question.

Another case of wanting to bring back ex-players/managers because they were once popular without any actual substance.

It doesn’t bother me either way about Foyle, but I think it’s a daft question to ask about what gems he’s unearthed to justify him now being right for us. Because how would anyone know what gems he’s unearthed when no one is following the clubs he’s worked for? All people are seeing is that he’s been working in the game at that role for the last 10 years or so, on the face of it thats a lot of experience working as a head of recruitment.  Also it’s not just necessarily about unearthing gems, it’s also about having the right contacts, building teams by bringing in the right type of players for them.

I'm pretty sure people are saying Colin Garlick just to take the pee

Brian, unfortunately I'm not sure that is the case. I do believe that some on here would be more than happy sitting on a plane, being flown by the ground crew manager, providing his name was Kirk.

Not really qualified to answer whether we need a DoF as such, because I’m not sure how important the role is at this stage.

A lot of the good stuff going on behind the scenes is now set up. I realise it needs to be managed, but couldn’t that be part of the CEOs job?

We certainly need to focus on recruitment, and invest in that area, and possibly funds for that could partly be generated by NOT replacing the DoF.

Good recruitment now will be so beneficial to the young squad, and would help to get the most out of their potential.

If a DOF will help with the football infrastructure within the club, and stay help with scouting then I am all for having one. DM should have the final say on signings, tactics, and formations.

Martin Foyle was in his early managerial career when he was at Vale. Maybe he has more knowledge now and could work.

Flickers is a wery good man to have, if your a,bition is to get promotion from league two. That is the level he hae been working on almost his hole carrier. That is the level he has, trough his network. And his name is pretty heavy wheight in that manner. That is his level. He has nothing to show, when coming to the next level.
He don't have the contacts or the credibility to take the club to the next level. We need now a far heavyer name as an DOF, with contacts and expirience from the two top divisions, who knows how to make us "Championship ready."
For as it shows Flickers is not that man, he is the one that gets you out of league two.

Unfortunately Flitcroft sometimes gets clubs the wrong way out of league 2. He isn't anything like as good as he thinks he is at any level unfortunately.
