Transfer Rumours Pre-Season

That 15-20 a year proven goal scorer certainly isn't out there for free that's almost certain by the looks of available strikers

We wont be signing a 20 goal a season striker. We will probably sign one that's scored say 10 a season a couple of times and we hope he can score a few more here.

I'm not shocked there are very few regular goalscorers about. I was fairly confident a league 1 club would take a punt. There's not much that inspires in terms of league 2 goalscorers in terms of goals and general play.

Bearing in mind they took a punt on Norwood from Tranmere who scored over 30 and didn't really make the step up that well ,my opinion is Palmer isn't fit to lace Norwoods boots

Tend to agree with this.  You'd have to think that we've signed a "chancer" in Rodney, although JA clearly rates him, and that we'll be looking for the 10 goal man you describe.

Let's not forget we also need a midfielder who can score a few, assuming Taylor goes elsewhere.

My main concern about next season is that I don't quite see where a good quantity of the goals we need are going to come from.

I don't either. 17 league goals from the 3 main strikers together by mid March was nowhere near enough. Taylor was joint second top scorer. Lots peppering in here and there from the midfield but there wasn't enough going on up front.

Alex Jones released. Looked very good at Vale shame injuries have hammered his career

Ian Henderson still a free agent? Obviously age is catching up with him but he knows where the net is .

Henderson doesn't fit our system. He's normally a 10 or midfield player. Don't think he will ever have played in the middle of a front 3. Could be a possible for midfield but not sure a player who is 36 next season would be able to press the way Askey expects. Good player but I doubt he'd be a good player the way we set up.

Not really an inspiring list (assuming Maynard is out of our budget). Need to go a long way down to find players not under contract or with a promoted club ... the return of Theo Robinson?

I'd hope if that's the case then Askey looks left field. We don't have to have a proven League 2 striker as a signing if none are any good.

We've had plenty of players who were in the reserves of clubs higher up (Lee Mills, Steve Brooker, Steve McPhee and Alex Jones to name four) who did the business for us from day one. And with the likes of Burgess, Taylor (no one had heard of either last summer) Askey looks to potentially have a decent scouting system who could possibly net him something similar.

My only worry with that is that the expectations of some the Vale fans these days is such that it seems that unless we sign one of the "big names" in the division then we've done awful and if we sign a relative unknown then they start moaning.

Maybe it's Akinfenwe time, although he thinks a press involves barbells.

He either picks a league 2 striker he feels is on the up or he'll have to look imaginatively at the options.  Agree about fan expectations, although I haven't seen many realistic options being suggested. Ultimately I think Askey will be forced to go with his gut instinct on a player. If County don't get promoted I think Kristian Dennis may become available. Prior to Christmas he wasn't making the team but he then scored a load of goals in February.  Notts County have an option of a 3rd year on his contract I think.

He was but he’s been signed by Bolton.

What he's been paid it isn't free.

I think a lot of us are guilty of wanting the marquee signing. An Ajose, Maynard etc.

Doesn't always work out , I know Ajose was injured a lot but didn't pull up any trees at Exeter really.

As with Manny it is a big IF but if we can get more minutes out of Cullen he ought to get more.

My only concern with Cullen is that he wasn't suited away from home. He couldn't be dropped after scoring a few but was generally hooked after the hour mark as he had struggled. He didn't hold up the ball very well away and struggled with physical centre halves .

That said you simply have to find an answer because you can't have one striker for home games and a different one for away games. There has to be continuity and reward for good performance .

According to the page that predicted the Devante Rodney signing, we're after ex-Utd Darron Gibson.

Given his drinking troubles, I can't see this one happening?Screenshot_20200714-104215_Twitter.jpeg

He'd be better off at Stoke with top supper O'Neill
