Nah, surely not? Askey was fairly clear that he didn't expect Nathan to sign and we were looking at other options, plus this Motherwall CB being seen at the club.

Only signing that would truely shock me ... the return of Ben Whitfield!

New 2 year contract for Nathan, very happy

A centre back group of Legge, Smith, Hartley and Brisley provides us decent cover and should be as good as any in the division.

Wow that's awesome.

Hartley is surely a bit of an over indulgence now i would think? I'd have been more than happy with him replacing Smith mind.

Indeed it would. Are we likely to sign Hartley now though - surely he was lined up to be Smith's replacement?

Fantastic news about Smith. Says everything about the current state of the club, team and manager that all of the out-of-contract players who were offered deals have stayed.

cant see us signing hartley now tbh,i think full back will be next target

Lots of credit to Carol and Askey for getting smith to sign

How about Wilf Kirkham?!

Bloody hell.

No idea where that's come from. Last minute u-turn? Not as much interest as Askey has claimed (though I can't see why they'd make it up)?

Regardless, whilst I wasn't devastated to lose him, to keep one of the better centre halves in the league, entering his prime, for another 2 years against (probable) competition from a higher level, is a big deal.

Interesting hypothetical after the sentinel story about Mitch Clark the other day.

Would you rather have Clark back, or Taylor?

Taylor all day.

Clark is great but a goal scoring midfielder is gold dust

Maybe Crewe will try to get him back now that they have lost Jones to Lincoln?
