Not much you could tell from the game today, Vale seemed very happy to treat it like a gentle warm up.

 

Some thoughts:

 

Positive:

 

Brown looks solid and made a spectacular save, kicking wasn’t what I would call accurate but hopefully the radar will improve as Match sharpness kicks in.

 

Joyce looks a real player, willing to take the ball, turn and drive forward and showed a good range of vision and passing.

 

Theo Vassell is a lot bigger than I thought and played well, vocal and got stuck in winning lots of headers.

 

Smith looked good when he came on, the only Vale centre half who can handle malbon (More on that later)

 

Rawlinson looked solid

 

Not so positive (I don’t want to say negatives as you really can’t tell in a game like this)

 

Legge didn’t have a good game at all, malbon ran him ragged and he misplaced a few passes. Hopefully it’s just a case of a senior pro knowing he doesn’t need to go all guns blazing in the first pre season game.

 

Daniels didn’t do much and neither did Gime.

 

Shame that Miller and Manny didn’t play, they were put through a very rigorous training session before away from the rest so maybe managing knocks or tightness.

Strange how we all see things differently, I thought Daniels started to show some quality last 20 minutes of the second half. Also thought Quigley got better after an anonymous first 20.

 

Calveley was decent second half. The back 4 was also more solid.

The result is of secondary importance - the lads got a run out and, given we have so many new players, they're starting to play together in the system Aspo has adopted for them. Hoping it's all fallen into place by the time we kick off against Cambridge.
