Players in and out

Rampant Zebra

Why, what's he done? ;-)

I think that ship has sailed tbh. I don't disagree from an ability perspective but given his apparently serious knee issue, any deal would have to be on a basic with pay as you play incentives, surely?

Yes, he may be a non-starter and his injury has ended his career but given the claims he's had a successful op and is fit again he's got to be worth checking out given his ability.

I too see Hannant as more effective in the middle rather than wide but Aspo's probably thinking his strength on the left coupled with Monty's flair gives us both attack and defence as they overlap and cover each other.

I think both Hannant and Worrall were steady options in front of the full backs, you know they're going to put a shift in going both ways. We saw that when Whitfield played there he wasn't as disciplined in his work tracking runners.

So with that in mind it'll be interesting to see how Daniels fits in, given how cauitous Aspin was at times and especially considering we have a new to the position Montano playing left back.

If your asking the fullback to overlap you need the wide players to be moving inside to make space for them. That's why you now get a lot of wingers playing on the opposite side to their natural foot. If your winger is too far forward it also takes too long for your fullback to get ahead of him. For a lot of teams wingers or wide midfield players rarely get in a cross and the fullback is the main source of balls in to the box. Most teams play a much more compact brand of football to 10 years ago. I think you are right, maybe not because he was lazy, but Whitfield was often a long way upfield from his fullback. That made it difficult for the fullback to get in support and it took too long for him to get back if the play moved quickly and a big gap for opposition midfield players to run in to.

Oh for the days of Guppy tearing a full back apart down the left, and McCarthy doing the same down the right. Would love to see this style of play back at VP, particularly with Popey in the middle.

The glory years!

Although people often forget we had Aspin or Walsh at fullback pretty often in those days. They were both also phenomenal work horses and did a much higher amount of work than 99% of players, both had great engines.
