Brexit again...

Recommended Posts

I have never met anyone who voted leave and regretted it. It's B***S*** in my opinion as the comment is probably a remainer still crying and trying to do what the media do - make it up!

I'm a leaver and feel more angry with a remainer running our country and buckling at every meeting with the EU. I would vote leave again and again.

I want rid of that rag that flies around our country yes the blue piece of fabric with an daft star emblem on it. It serves not point and has no history.

I'm sure the EU nationals will be more upset if we decided void their licence as from now.

Believe in Britain

I'm not surprised you've not met anyone who's regretted it from your padded cell.

I guess we'll have to disagree on this one,it looks like I'm one of the 44% and you're one of the 21%.

In a YouGov poll it found 44 per cent were proud of Britain’s history of colonialism while only 21% regretted that it happened.23% held neither view.

The same poll also asked about whether the British Empire was a good thing or a bad thing: 43% said it was good, while only 19% said it was bad. 25% responded that it was “neither.

From a YouGov poll taken in January 2016.

And how many of that 44% had studied the history of British colonialism??

Somebody must be I suppose.

Not too sure about London but in Stoke-on-Trent and Newcastle-under-Lyme 67% of the residents are proud to be Englanders whereas a massive 69% of Staffordshire Moorlanders love the honour.

Did you know Mr.Claus that humour, tradition and good manners are the characteristics most associated with being English.

Come on England.

Who's proud to be English these days?

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-44142843

Saw that earlier today. Interestingly people in the north are most proud of the nation, including our area.

I'm not sure what this survey actually demonstrates because I think people have very diverse opinions on what pride is. There are lots of things to be proud of about England but that can be said of all advanced, civilised nations so should we be more 'proud' to be English than other nationalities should be 'proud' of their countries? Personally my feeling of 'pride' in the nation comes from my thinking we behave in a generally fair manner collectively. Obviously this is a matter of opinion and open to criticism but I think England is a pretty decent country and better than many others, even some supposedly leading nations.

I have to say it's disappointing that a significant proportion of the population don't feel any national pride, things might not be perfect but they aren't anywhere and England's hardly a bad country by any measure, e.g., freedom, standard of living, criminal justice, international relations, educational opportunities, whatever. If, as a nation, we behaved like we did in the 19th century then I could understand people not being proud of it but we've come a long way since then and have a much more balanced and egalitarian society. Even though there are many things we all criticise or like about England, dependent on personal opinion, and many things Englishmen & women argue about - the EU and Brexit being a prime example - that's healthy in my view and the open argument and debate is, in my opinion, something we can be particularly proud of.

As I said, this survey doesn't really demonstrate a great deal because we're none the wiser as to why people are or aren't proud of being English and what are the respondent correlations to the different questions, such as does ethnicity directly correlate to national pride or not? For all we know people who have come here as immigrants for a better life may feel more national pride than those born here because this country has improved their it in life. Conversely the complete opposite could also be true.

I suspect the publishers of this survey are attempting to show some link between nationalism, 'pride' and Brexit but that's not necessarily the case because, along with many people I know who are 'Remainers' like myself, I do have pride in being English because we have plenty to be proud of, which is not to be confused with uninformed nationalistic bigotry as demonstrated by organisations like the BNP or EDL.

I'm proud to be English and also proud to be European.

I'm just neutral. We're just another nation really, I don't think the English are inherently better or worse than, say, the Germans or the Spanish. I wouldn't say it's to do with pride, I'm fairly ambivalent towards the concept of nationality and nationalism in general.

I'm proud to be Geordie. It's a shame for the rest of you who aren't.

Agreed. And people can be proud for opposite reasons. One person could have a very nationalistic chest thumping pride, while someone else can be proud of having an open multicultural society. I do think a sense of national pride needs to be reclaimed from the bnp/edl section of society. A pride that doesn’t have to be about being superior to other countries, but appreciating what we have. We are born here due to an accident of birth, just like everyone else. I just appreciate that it could b a lot worse.

There has to be more to patriotism than just waving a flag about every now and then (eg royal weddings), or taking vicarious pride in other people's achievements that you played no part in at all, just because they happened to come from the same country as you.

I don’t see our fellow Europeans as enemies but as allies who we should continue to work with closely, that is not an issue but it does not mean we are better off paying a fortune to be a member of a club that does not allow us to run our country and trade with other nations as we wish.

You have a different opinion of whether or not we should remain in the EU and that’s fair enough but it does not mean we have a different opinion on who should be our allies. I’m sure we will continue to work very closely and trade with the EU as we are doing now.

It does make you wonder though if they are true allies when you have Chief EU bully Michel Barnier saying things like "We don't want to negotiate. We don't want to compromise" just last week.

With friends like that, who needs enemies?

England and the rest of the western world have generated the best, most open, welcoming and fairest societies on the planet, have been responsible for most of the major break throughs in science, medicine and engineering, the most diverse and sophisticated art forms and sports known etc etc. England has punched above its weight.

The proof of the pudding. Is that most people on the planet would like to come and live in the England and the western world.

We should be proud for what’s been achieved

Agreed. So it's a shame we are now slamming the door and sticking 2 fingers up at the rest of the world.
