I think of players who are mid to late 20's and not necessarily at the wrong end of their career.

 

I didn't say they were, but with the age and experience of the 4 that I referred (Tonge alone must be pushing 150!), I don't see the point of ignoring the prospects and younger players that Aspo and JR are obviously looking at for this constantly mentioned 'league experience'. If we can persuade established league players who can improve us (and that's a big IF) on reasonable wages and contract length then all the better, but I'm not going to lose sleep if we can't, given the fact that we already have an aged spine. Plus, I don't think Aspo will be spending money bringing such players in now, given the wages that most of them would want as opposed to the prospects and, also, the fact that most of the 'experienced' players would want at least an 18 month contract (Aspo will clearly want to wait until the summer until rebuilding the squad to any great extent, and may not want to be offering 18 month contracts to experienced players who will be joining in January, given that most will be others cast-offs).

But we let Hughill go for peanuts because we wouldn't pay the going rate. And now are dreaming of getting some money IF Preston decide to sell him before his contract runs out.

 

Should Preston sell him(which i believe they will) we will get far more than we ever would if we hadn't sold him for peanuts,i have not been a fan of smurfs over the past couple of seasons for obvious reasons but i will credit him for getting a 20% clause put in there,will you??

I could be wrong (and probably am) but wasn't it the Tribunal that put it in and not us? I MAY be thinking of Dave Hibbert here and getting confused.....

Thing is, if he runs down his contract and leaves for free, 20% of nothing is nothing. We could have had him as a player for another season and then sold him ourselves for all the money if we wanted.

Players in the lower leagues will rarely go for big bucks, clubs will justify a bigger fee for players in the championship and prem.

Money may not have come into it for Hugill, as from Preston it is much easier for him to get home to the north east than it is from here.

According to his autobiography, it was Micky Adams who did the negotiations with Preston as their chairman found it impossible to deal with Norman
