Match thread: Buxton v Port Vale

I've lost track of all the rightbacks who've tried to replace Yates and failed. He would have improved the team last year if he'd been fit. He's never been great but he's a pretty steady player. He may well end up starting at leftback this season.

How did they fail? Purkiss was a far better right back in his first season than Yates. He's a decent player to have around the squad and as back up but not a starter. With Wilson signed, him as first choice and Yates as back up is decent. I'd be very worried if we start our first match with Yates starting at left back.

He was a far worse right back last season though

There is also the issue of time moving more quickly due to the height of Buxton and whether the players adapted?

So, Einstein says that time passes more slowly at sea level. He should have tried watching Vale away last season.

Vale playing at altitude in Buxton - 960 feet. Kidsgrove only 460 feet. Newcastle under Lyme 434 feet. Burslem 512 feet. Thinner air affected the performance?
Or was travel fatigue more of a factor? Do we play any games in Spain this week?

From another thread, would you fancy signing Jennison Myrie Williams and playing him at left back?

Fair post, personally I would prefer a first choice left back and to release Yates.

That would leave us Wilson and Gibbons and then a new man and Kelly as full backs.

Yates clearly divides opinion. If he is to play, it has to be at right back. He has played on the left, but as his left foot is purely for standing on we have no balance on that side. I don't see the point in having an aging, injured, journeyman purely as cover. That situation should be for one of the younger players looking to make their way in the game.

I`m not sure why yates gets such a bad reception on here, he is a good solid league 2 defender-we have had far worse.

Yates should never have been offered a contract can't tackle and useless in the air.why waste a wage on him when better players are available.

Maybe they don't want to upset his mate Popey.
