Port Vale v Cheltenham match thread - 1st Jan

Featured Replies

While never wanting us to lose I am at the stage where I would take a 4 - 3 defeat and have a go and attack the opposition.  It will however be another negative game that will result in either a 1 nil defeat or will be a nil nil draw.

Vale have only won once in the last 34 years on new year's day and that was a couple of years ago away at forest green. Prior to that it was a big home win against Ipswich.

Vale have only beat Cheltenham twice in the last 13 meetings so it's another team we have a poor record against.

I'm not bothered if we lose I just want see an improved performance, high press, putting effort in none of this play out the back crap. Also like most others on here I'd like see Amos given a few games in goal, as for me Ripley apart from the Bromley game where he was superb has been poor and at fault for a number of the goals. Id also like see smith in ahead of debrah as he's generally a steady defender at this level and is capable of winding opponents up and getting players booked, sent off ect something that we don't seem to be doing this season.

I’d play John as right centre back. Our best run of form came with Sang mostly there. Obviously Sang isn’t available.

Back three of John, Smith or Heneghan, Hall.

Wing backs of Cover and Clark.

Chislett and Croasdale in the middle.

Curtis Stockley Richards as a front three.

If Stockley isn’t fit then give Tolaj a go upfront. No point shoe horning Tolaj and Paton in as wingers or number tens anymore.

I’d settle for an exciting 0-0, they do happen

I'd settle for high intensity, pressing high up the pitch mindset from the players and manager , Attack the opposition and you've got more chance of getting a result but if Moore sticks to his usual philosophy we'll be lucky to nick a draw

Hey, if only Carlsberg did PVFC games

Going for 4 changes and 1 striker.  Rest of the team will be defensive and play lump ball to the striker who is double marked.

Just hope DM and CO realise they are loosing the fans and change things around and Vale start the year with 3 points.

That's a nice thought mate but I just Conner see Darren changing his tactics but stranger things have happened

Stoke

Talk from Moore about going back to basics. Interesting and up to interpretation. For me:

Play players in their best position.

Play experienced players

Start to create 'a style/system' that allows for us to attack (352 - for me) and stick to it. Give it a chance to develop and improve.

352 against Cheltenham for whom I believe is available:

                       Ripley

            Smith   Heneghan Hall

                       Croasdale

Mitch                          Grant.            John

                       Chissy

                    Paton.   Tolaj

Got to admit though - this doesn't look very pretty on paper, nevermind on the park.

Is it safe come back on here yet? 😂😂

Personally I don't care what team is picked, as I can't see us being anything other than total dross. All I ask is that whoever is picked puts in a real shift and does occasionally manage to pass the ball to someone in the same strip.

Not too much to ask.

Is it?

Strange to be where we are in the league and the atmosphere being close to toxic but that’s because we all saw this last season too. New Year’s Day is crucial for me now and not necessarily for the result. The performance will be a huge indicator of where we are and if we are up for a fight or not but mainly if he players want to play for Darren Moore. Another performance like the last few particularly the weekend and I think the writing is on the wall.

Fair point

I'd go

    Amos

Clark Hall John

Cover.             Grant

     Chislett Croasdale Curtis

             Tolaj D Edwards

Need to get away from mentality that you need defensive minded players on pitch ,you dont if they don't join in and stretch the opposition time to throw caution to the wind ,and try something completely different

Our home performances are not go for it ones that has to change to

1 get the fans involved and encouraging they not going encourage 3 central defenders 2 of whom who haven't a positive play forwards pass bones in there bodies. .

Like I say it times to rip up the stay in game ,nick a goal and be organised too a little disorganised but fun to watch as every player bar Amos piles forwards .

Other than Sang is suspended, John and Clarke to short for CB, Tolaj and Cover down in confidence and Edwards not good enough it's a decent side.
