January Transfers and Rumours

Interesting quote from Swindon that they have enquired after Jake Young and that realistically only a Championship Club or the top League 1 teams could afford the fee. I suspect we were interested but I suspect beyond our budget.

Don't know much about Young but I did watch highlights of Hartlepool games when Askey was manager. I must be honest I think Kemp is more of the type of player we need this window. He broadly brings what Wilson does to a team, although significantly shorter. Both he and Young have 16 goals but Kemp has a load of assists. Young seems more of a target man. I suspect he's more affordable as he can leave for free in the summer. He looked a class act for Hartlepool,  although flopped in league 1 for MK Dons.

I wouldn't mind a pop at Tshimanga from Posh. I know he's struggled since moving up to L1, but he's a good age and could so well in the right environment.

He's already played for Peterborough and Fleetwood this season.  He's not able to sign elsewhere. He's also not done very well this season.

Just a thought ...

In the Rudge years we bought players cheaply. Sold them on when playing well then used a proportion of the sale to buy the replacement to develop and then sell on etc etc

Is Garrity and Weir the rebirth of that ideology perhaps? Considering one is injured and the other only a loan not a permanent signing I am jumping a lot of bridges, heart ruling head of course. Just dreaming that any possible sale of Garrity could be a positive and not a disaster for us.

Lots of dreaming and assuming going on there, methinks! 😉

End of the season  I'd like to see James Wilson get a long term contract cos since he's come back in the team the guy has been absolute pure class , in my opinion.

I will be surprised if he gets a long term deal here maybe 6 monthly again or 12 at the most

Rudgie’s book highlights that we regularly bought players in the 80s for £30-50,000 which adjusted for inflation, that’s £140,000 today. It makes you realise that tight old Billy Bell wasn’t so miserly compared to our modern era.

Of course we also have the the Bosman ruling to contend with now so good players rarely command big money in the lower leagues and the best guys remain well out of reach.

Michael Flynn admitted the Wiltshire club would love to have signed him permanently after a prolific 16-goal loan spell. But they cannot afford the figure the Bantams would want for a striker who is under contract to the end of next season – with a further year’s option in the club’s favour after that.

“There is no chance of getting Jake Young in terms of his transfer fee,” Flynn told our sister paper, the Swindon Advertiser.
