In a way, Solihull merged with Moor Green. Though at the time they were two separate clubs,

Sorry Donald 😉

TJH makes a good point, I think when we were more successful in this division at the start of the 2000s most of our better players came from being released by or signed from 'bigger' clubs.  Brooker(Watford), Cummins(Middlesborough), Bridgey(was he Derby or is my memory failing?), McPhee(Coventry?).

But then a bit later we had Constantine and Sodje from Torquay and Darlington(although both had been around the houses a bit previously in the lower leagues).  Like Rob says though it's swings and roundabouts, no harm having your finger on the pulse of the non league scene.

someone in non league would have to match is reported 3k a week salary though.

Teams like Chesterfield, Oldham would easily match is his wages or their could be a deal done where we contribute towards his wages in a loan spell until the end of the season

Possibly, although they don't receive a lot of the payments  that football league clubs do to boost their budgets. The question is, would they want a non scoring forward who would take up a large salary?

Moor Green were the senior club founded in 1901, so Solihull Borough founded in 1953 merged with them to become Solihull Moors and possibly play in the FL one day. I suppose Ian Taylor was Moor Green`s greatest product based on his Villa Premier League career.

We've got to hope there's a niche market for non-striking strikers.

I think I've got an old book in the LOFT about non -striking strikers.

Our most recent dip into non league was Deborah who is big, quick and strong with potential to improve with better coaching.

Before that was the last non-league player Rodney? I know we got him from Salford but had been on a succession of national league loans. Anyway think we had the same approach with Rodney in that we thought he had a physical edge and could develop the rest.

Just saying that unless a non-league player is wildly talented and somehow gone under the radar they'll probably have an outstanding physical attribute - Pace (young vardy), Strength (Deborah), Size (Hudlin).

Occasionally you get a player like garritty rise up through sheer grit, determination and desire.

I would imagine the last one was Lucas Covolon wasn't it?

I think certainly recent seasons (especially the influx under Askey - Kieran Kennedy, Fitzpatrick, Trickett-Smith, Rawlinson, Callum Evans, Jordan Archer, Jonny Maddison the list goes on) may have skewed some opinions (perhaps deservedly) on concentrating too much on non-league 'bargains'. That list shows you need decent scouting to select the wheat from the chaff. However, the likes of Peterborough have shown it can be done if you do it properly and pick out only the top prospects.

For me, I wouldn't want to see a sudden influx of half a dozen non-league players like Askey brought in, but I wouldn't be unhappy if the club bring in the odd one to see if they can develop them.

Stupid comment m8.

I was just quoting what he said himself in that interview. It seemed like a strange thing to say really. 🙂
