Jordan Hughill was a non league gem, unfortunately we let him go for Smurfs wallet.

Obviously the loanees will go back down the line. Other than Arblaster all have been poor to average, including Devine.

Las no league player we signed was Debroah from Hailifax

Still at Rochdale. Believe he's been quite ill though.

IF you sign the odd one then why not, he would likely be a low fee/wage and if he develops into a good striker for us great, we have in theory a proper recruiting and scouting system now so would be good to see if it worked out.

The fact so many clubs are linked suggests he is widely regarded as worth the chance.

He was decent that first season with no crowds and scored some crackers, tore Ricardo Santos to shreds at Bolton away, he was one player I really thought would massively benefit from having the crowds back post Covid season behind closed doors as he would get the crowd going and get the noise behind him but just didn't hit those heights again for us. Was really disappointed, he was the one I was most looking forward to watching play for us in the flesh who I expected to get me off my seat.

Gambling with non league players has been done far too much at Vale and has never worked. It has never been done properly and it seems we poorly scout for league standard players so god help our efforts to find non league gems.

There are enough players at Vale already who should be playing non league, we don’t need to invite more.

What Peterborough do is that they have a small number of top class pros on very good wages who encourage and raise the standard of their side. They also have a massive catchment area with Cambridge United miles away and the likes of Norwich and Ipswich equally so.

They also invest good money into that market.  They don't sign the Kyle perry's and Chris slaters off the back of a cup tie.

They paid a lot of money for Assombalonga, for example, as they must have been fairly confident he'd go on for even bigger money.  £5.5m forest paid for him.

They reinvest a good part of that into the next guy and so on.

We'd look at, I don't know, a £500k asking price for a top performing non league player and stay well clear.

They'd be in, knowing they'll fetch ten times that in the near future.

Obviously they scout them properly as well.  Ricky Miller looked a top performing non league player....

Carlisle have signed goalkeeper Harry Lewis from Bradford for a reported fee of £125k. They also signed Luke Armstrong from Harrogate for a decent fee. Wrexham bid £500k for Armstrong in the summer so god knows how much they've paid. Carlisle do have new American owners though.

Two brilliant signings. But they need them, Carlisle fan was on the match thread saying they haven’t paid close to that for Armstrong

Possibly, although they don't receive a lot of the payments  that football league clubs do to boost their budgets. The question is, would they want a non scoring forward who would take up a large salary?

Chesterfield have got a record this season of getting mis firing strikers scoring again. Will Grigg and the best example is they have got 7 goals out of Joe Quigley.

Hopefully, they need some cover & "experience" in the forward line to make sure they get over the line with promotion this season.

Will Griggs is reportedly on £5k a week, so, I'm sure they can afford Loft

Surprised that the fee for Lewis wasn't much higher. Good keeper.

TJH makes a good point, I think when we were more successful in this division at the start of the 2000s most of our better players came from being released by or signed from 'bigger' clubs.  Brooker(Watford), Cummins(Middlesborough), Bridgey(was he Derby or is my memory failing?), McPhee(Coventry?).

But then a bit later we had Constantine and Sodje from Torquay and Darlington(although both had been around the houses a bit previously in the lower leagues).  Like Rob says though it's swings and roundabouts, no harm having your finger on the pulse of the non league scene.

No mention of overseas leagues (apart from UK & Ireland) ? We may be once bitten twice shy because of the Bruno season but there may be as much value in still looking overseas than in the lower English tiers.  Have proportionally more overseas players been successful than our non-league recruits? -can only think of Robin van der Laan ( Dutch 2nd division) as being really successful (Heald, Andoh, Jensen?) but we’ve not brought in a huge pool of players compared to those with a non-league background (admittedly Bruno year was an exception).

Brexit might prevent this.
