Looking at pitch sizes today, smallest ones in our division are Derby and Bolton, both 105  by 68 compared with our 114 by 77, definitely need Jones on with his long throw on their small pitch !

Yes it's created umpteen chances and goals hasn't it at small grounds like Crawley, Stevenage and Sutton 😳

Genuine question. Have we ever scored from a Jones long throw because I can't think of one?

No we haven't. I don't even feel remotely excited when we get one.

Saturday they either went straight to an 18 stone bloke in bright pink who seemed to attract the ball or were headed clear.

They are not really very good are they. We don't get flick ons, second balls, ricochets or anything.

I think you're comparing Derby's in metres against ours in yards.

In metres ours becomes 104 x 70.5

In all fairness the throws are decent enough we just ain’t big or strong enough to win the headers

I don't feel the trajectory is right. The distance is fine but there's no fizz or pace to get flicks on. It just sort of hangs. Easy pickings for a confident keeper. All the pace would have to be generated by the player heading it.

Myself I'd ditch it. Only one I can recall of note was at FGR last season and it was down the line rather than straight into the box. Took them by surprise and Garrity was clean through on goal but the keeper made a good save.

I started another thread on DJ's throws recently and I concluded that the payers in the box are too static. I don't think the trajectory is the problem. Surely our players should be hanging out outside/on edge of box with DJ aiming for penalty spot so that we can get a run on the defenders and the keeper has to think twice about coming for it?

With regards the long throw-in and indeed corners as well I think Vale are pretty poor at scoring from either, certainly I can't recall a goal coming from a long throw-in, and I can't recall too many goals lately from corners either.........and Lord knows when we last scored a penalty within 90 minutes 😉

Think last 'bullet ' type header from a corner was Garrity at Rochdale.

We certainly aren't prolific.

We have to make the defenders think that the throw may result in a goal. They have watched previous games and nothing has happened, but with players moving into runs it may unsettle the defence as we may have been working on something.
