Match Thread: Derby County v Port Vale

Fosse69

Recommended Posts

First trip to Pride Park for SVA. 101 years since a league win in Derby, although some of us will remember the 3-2 Cup win at the Baseball ground a mere 30 years ago.  Former League Champions and Cup winners but counts for nothing in L1.  The Rams have beaten Posh and Barnsley at home, and new manager Paul Warne bounced at Cambridge.  At 36 is McGoldrick, a loanee at the Vale from the Saints a lifetime ago past it? Injury news of Ojo Fonso puts him out of the picture for a while, but there are still options for the midfield to be tried.  Fear not Vale, set up for a draw and snatch a win?

Ditch the wing backs for this game and go more robust in midfield.

I like the idea of us doing something differently because I don’t think our wingbacks system has worked that well so far this season, but have we even got a natural right back in the squad?

I am sympathetic to the formation / wingback issues. But changing is a big deal requiring training and practice and therefore is another problem to be solved. DC is seeing our main problem as quality in the attacking third. That's individual players need to improve on things like crossing in open play and at set pieces. It's maybe also implementing the team attacking plan better.

That said I think Massey is much more effective in an attacking position - and not the type of attacking position a wingback finds, one that a winger finds.

Thats the problem.  Cass more right side CH and Robinson or Worrall are wing backs.

Not great fan of Cass as right back but we are wedded to the wing back system anyway.

Lewis got schooled at Peterborough, I'm not sure we can risk him again at Derby at right back.

If we must play 3 at the back against Derby as this is the formation that Clarke is staying with i'm going left field with my selection. Most people on here think we won't get a point so here goes with my selection:                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                  Stephens                                                                                                                                                     Forrester                                      Hall                    Jones

          Robinson              Garrity               Walker        McDermott       Benning

                                                                 Polotic

                                                            Harrison

Subs:    Stone  Smith Pett Conlon Wilson Odebeke Worrall Massey

Swap Garrity for Politic and I quite like that side.

Garrity was really good against Wednesday… he ll be nailed on starter and rightly so
