Open Letter to Mr Lloyd

Dear Mr Lloyd

I was astonished to hear your response to the Radio Stoke reporter as I was driving home from Northampton and even more astonished that your idea of communicating with the supporters of this football club was to knock up a quick text to the station afterwards. I was absolutely furious, however, to hear your excuse for the club’s inability to meet its obligations to the taxman. It is, in your opinion, all the fault of the fans and SEO. Well let me explain to you, Mr Lloyd, why you are totally deluded in this assumption and not fit to be in charge of our football club.

Firstly, there is absolutely no obligation on supporters to attend games. It is entirely their choice whether they do so or not. In recent seasons Vale’s average attendances have increased from a low of 4,400 in 2008 up to over 5,500 last year. In each of those seasons the Board of Directors, of which you have been a part, has still managed to produce six figure losses in the accounts. Was that the fault of the supporters or was it incompetence and mismanagement at the top?

Secondly, you and the rest of the directors were told very clearly what the situation would be this season if there was not major change at the club. Starve ‘em Out was actually the most help bit of customer feedback you have ever received. The fans were clear enough, you go or we don’t. You chose to ignore that clear message and instead, appear to have set a budget, which was dependent on wholly unrealistic attendance figures. Had fans simply walked away from the club your difficulties could, perhaps, be understood. But they didn’t – they told you what they were going to do. They told you attendances would be down. They told you takings in the shop and in the catering outlets would be down. Yet you chose to ignore this and go on a ridiculous spending spree paying our stupid and totally undeserved salary packages to individuals who would find it difficult to organise a successful booze up in a brewery.

Now you find you can’t pay the bills and instead of accepting responsibility for the ludicrous mismanagement of the club’s finances, you seek to alienate further those very people upon whom you depend to improve your income streams by blaming them for the current mess. Quite frankly, Mr Lloyd, your actions make me weep. So may I politely request that you get yourself back down the M6 to Walsall and take that collection of rogues and vagabonds who infest our Board Room with you.

What a great post Jean!! Bob on. Although I don't actually think the crowds are down due to SEO, I think it is the more casual supporter who has simply got so fed up with their antics that they have had enough and walked away, and they will be more difficult to attract back than the SEO remnants, ie as soon as MOLD are gone Mike Lakin etc will be back like a shot - will those others? Blimey even with us pushing for promotion ( until the point deduction anyway) they still won't come - and I don't blame them. ===
