I have no idea how to make a crumpet. I haven't particularly needed to either, since they're fairly cheap down the shops.

How do you get the little holes inside it?

Ask points with bone,he seems like an expert on crumpet! Could explain his name...

Don't think even the pigeons would fancy them unless using them as nest linings

Unfair.  Pigeons love an NS oatie crumbled up, to the consistency of fine grit.  Allegedly, carefully folded to avoid cracking, they're also loved by most cage birds, when jammed through the cage bars as a ready made substitute for cuttlefish bone.  With the main benfit being that they outlast cuttlefish bone by some considerable time.

On a slight tangent, have any dog owners tried them instead of pig luggers?

You've got plenty of fish to make up for your oatcakes. Get on that St Mawes ferry and see what you can catch! :classic_wink:

You've also got a fabulous pub, Pennycomequick, in the square, where the lads who run it do amazing food and are great guys.

Failing that get some from High Lane. I buy them regularly from there and as far as I am aware they haven't changed the recipe and are still the best for miles around but everyone has their own opinions and tastes.

Hamil Road are not bad either.

We got millions of restaurants admittedly. If you like seafood then the wheelhouse is mega but you have to book way in advance, then owners are clients so I can sneak up the standby list sometimes, the warehouse bistro is ace as is amanzi South African restaurant and they are all lovely people as well. Penny come quick is descent as it goes and its only a few doors down from my work...

All very well and good, but where d'you buy your oatcakes?  What about pikelets?  Plain or fruit?

They should be cheap there is bugger all in them.

Half a bag of flour, half a pint of milk and a few grams of yeast makes enough for a dozen or more depending how big and thick you like them.

Sadly not everyone has the easy access to a supply. My nearest shop for oatcakes or pikelets is about 4,000 miles away or 6,000 miles if I want high lane.

As for the holes...... the natural process of single-cell organism fungi.

We live in the Highlands, so getting hold of oatcakes is problematic and they don't do well after being frozen

However, wife number 2, 'She-who-Wiggles', has mastered the art of making them. Indeed she says it's not that difficult

Wife number 4, 'Scrubs-up-Well' also likes to make them, we haven't the heart to tell her, but her's are always a bit too thick

Good oatcakes have to be just so

When in the Potteries I get mine from the oatcake shop on Kings Street, Fenton

My grandfather served for many years in the North Staffordshire Regiment in India and he told me that a story told in the regiment was that the recipe for oatcakes were something that soldiers of the regiment had brought back with them - a kind of oat based chapati

I've seen the story repeated in the 'Guardian' so it may have some veracity, though oat based savoury breads have been a staple food of working people going back to the 1700's

Whatever; they are something for the Potteries to be proud of

Best served on Burgess & Leigh Calico ware of course

Where 4 wives is the norm... they're just called sisters instead!

With me there is:

'Comes-with-dowry'

'Walks-with-Wiggle'

'Dances-on-Tables'

and

'Scrubs-up-Well'

Originally there was nearly a different wife number one, but it never would have worked with 'Shops-without-Money'

There was also another contender for wife number three; but again, although a lovely girl with many positive assets, a long-term relationship would not have been possible with 'Fights-with-Shadows'
