About Port Vale Fail – Bob Delgado

Welsh defender Bob Delgado’s time with Port Vale coincided with one of the club’s poorest-ever seasons? A coincidence? Perhaps not.

The centre-half had started his career in the Welsh leagues before being signed by Luton Town. Further spells at Carlisle United and Rotherham United followed.

So sorry to appear to be nitpicking but accuracy is important. No one of that name ever played for Port Vale. His name is Delgado. The word Delgado is Spanish and literally translates in English to thin

Not at all - rookie error, there's certain names I can never get right - this is now corrected. Thanks for letting me know.

Your assessment of his ability was entirely accurate. Dennis Butler's decision making in the transfer market was dreadful. Matched only by that of Freddie Steele. Freddie was a wonderful coach, tactician and motivator but his record in the transfer market was awful.

In fairness to Butler, Delgado always played well against us and it was only when he signed for us that he transformed into the nightmare centre half those of us of a certain age cannot forget.

Yes that is fair comment. My overall assessment of Butler was based on the number of high price signings who were awful. Delgado would have been worth a punt for about a tenth of what we paid.

I think that's the same point with the previous signing Lawrie Wilson as well. In that - things that look like a good move on paper (and for which the manager can't necessarily be blamed) don't always work out in reality as football isn't predictable.

As for the two big money signings that season, I haven't finished the Port Vale Fails series yet!

On that accurate summing up, Ken Todd must surely make this list ! lol

Agreed. I was quite excited when he signed because he’d always been a thorn in Vale’s side. He was absolutely pants in a Vale shirt though.

Bob Delgado was awesome when he played for Chester against Vale, when he came to Vale he was a different player, he was a liability.

Ken Todd was the worst player I ever saw play for Vale, he didn't even look like a footballer, we paid a ridiculous amount of money for him from Wolves. Apparently he is now a gazillionare living in California, he married and a British actress named Lisa Vanderpump who has made a name for herself on a tv show called Real Housewives of Beverley Hills among others and they have opened up a chain of successful restaurants over the USA.

I liked Peter Farrel, good, skillful player who linked Vale's together, he got a lot of unwarranted stick from Vale fans IMHO.

Wasn’t it Huddersfield away when he scored 2 OGs? When he signed, we thought we had a great player but he was a shocker.

Wonder who’s next, “Tommy Gore, when he gets the ball, they will score”? Kevin Pilkington, The first player Man U lost on a Bosnam? Lawrie Pearson, Gary Pollard? It’s endless.

Kenny Todd btw was running a pub in Southsea up to 2 years ago.

Sorry to nipick again. Lisa married a man called Ken Todd who was about 15 years older than her. That puts her husband in his mid 70s. Ken Todd ex Vale player is 61 years of age. He is not a rich man living in the USA with his glamourous actress wife.
