Tommy Lawrence has died, aged 77. He was a great servant and Liverpool's 'keeper under Shankly. Great memories of the flying pig. Nice bloke too. A sad day for Liverpudlians.

Good goalkeeper in his day. I remember Tommy Mac scoring a goal into the room of the net off his backside. May he RIP

Indeed. Looking at that team, if the younger supporter who has only seen today’s sanitised football, how would you begin to describe Ron Yeats’ “playing” style ? A man mountain who did not even contemplate taking prisoners. I never had the pleasure of seeing the pig fly live, but sadly another one of footballs characters leaves us, but at least with happy memories of a time when football genuinely was the People’s Game. The only change from anfield was Jimmy Melia for Alf Arrowsmith Lawrence made a blinding safe from Mudie at the kop end we were so close to beating the best team in england that day.

My dad took me to Stoke to see them play Liverpool in about 1966. They drew 0-0 it was one of the best keeping performances I’ve ever seen...He saved everything Stoke could throw at him and hedid seem to fly. Brilliant goalie

That's a wonderful video clip - the way his face lights up when the reporter speaks to him about the game, and he says "yes, I know, I was in goal that day" Wonderful bloke, and a far cry from the preening posers of the modern Premiership. I doubt he died a wealthy man, but God rest him, he loved the game.

I remember the headline in the Sunday Express it read "Hancocks Half Hour" a reference to Tony Hancocks TV comedy programme at the time.Ken Hancock the Vale keeper kept the might of Liverpool at bay in the second half he was that good the Kop gave him an ovation at full time.
