It's good to see healthy debate and some memories of the old times being revived.

A poll like this would be pointless if everyone agreed on the two to pick so it's nice to see a range of choices put forward including some not on the shortlist.

I did take my time thinking about the shortlist and many of those mentioned were considered but in the end I had to reduce it down to a reasonable number of players.

One I thought long and hard about, for instance, was Basil Hayward, forward of the 1954 side. Most of the other "Ultimate XI" positions had at least one member of the Iron Curtain side in it and this was the only vote not to do so...

The challenge we face is that we can only comment on our time from a small child to current date. For example for me it was 1979 to current date

For me although I had seen newton, moss, and gave ten weeks pocket money to help buy beckford it will always be Tony Naylor.

And we do not have videos to show us young un s what we missed of pre 1980s strikers

Great to talk about it However

Oppologies of no relevance to this thread but I have stated on OVF Ben Whitfield for me is the new Tony Naylor. Energy pace goals will come

I agree it is impossible to comment on players you have not seen. However, Ronnie Allen is regarded as one of the finest players to have played for WBA(when they were a TOP side)and considering his England appearances he must be in there. My other choice has to be Andy Jones and I was at the Racecourse when he scored for Wales. Incidentally, Ronnie Allen is the only player to have scored a competitive goal in the first 20 seasons following WW2. Now that’s a RECORD !

I had to go with Andy Jones. He was my first ever football hero as a young boy growing up.

My other pick was Naylor. He may not have the goals of someone like Foyle but I think he was so underrated. He had the skill to reach the very top and scored some of the best goals I’ve ever seen.
