Successive owners have consistently gone for the cheap option instead of going for a tried and tested manager at this level. I think ultimately that's been Vale's biggest problem over recent years, generally you pay for what you get.

It was only a handful of matches.

When we beat MK Dons we were in our highest position of 4th but it was only after 12 games. People were all excited way too soon.

At that time, Southend were 22nd, Sheffield Utd 8th, Bury 3rd and Northampton 6th.

The league table hadn't settled down.

A season is a long hard slog. Something that our players and management team haven't been good enough to produce so far.

Add Foyle and that mad bloke to that list. As I've said before, since sir John we've only had two professional football managers. Wonder where Horton would have taken us if he'd been paid properly. He went to hull and look what they did. Go back to mid 70s. Gordon Lee asked for and didn't get a proper contract after us missing out in 72/73. He went to Blackburn and his champions trounced us 4-1 on last day if season 74-75. Pattern?

Whats the use of paying big money for a manager ,then giving him a miserly playing budget. Would sooner have someone like Browney in charge,and having money to spend on fees/wages for DECENT players.

I think all this **** started when smurf decided that he would cut Popeys wage , forcing our top scorers for 2/3 seasons out of the club . Desperation and paying peanuts, bought in very cheap alternatives, AJ, Forrester, Paterson, Cecillia, JJ . He decided THEN to do the same to the rest of the team . This is where we are , a five year plan to get to the championship ON THE CHEAP , you reap what you sow.

Imo the problem is that we never had a plan b under Bruno. We started the season very well with some impressive wins and good tactics. However teams figured us out and Bruno never changed the system. In my opinion that's why he lost his job and the downfall began, at to that a shocking January transfer window and no appointment of a manager; brown or another, he slump continued and got worse.

We were terrible under Bruno but somehow picking up points. When we needed to change it up Bruno didn't have the tactical nouse so was relived of his duties.

 

Brown came in and instead of steadying the ship he turned it upside down midway through a season with a team on a terrible run.

 

Terrible transfer window and stubbornness has put us where we are.

I think he was right to try and rebuild the team, not many of the new signings are up to League 1. It isn't just about pretty football, you have to play hard for 90 minutes.

It all went wrong at Sheff Utd away, Bruno lost the dressing room after this clueless performance and this is when he had his spat with Purkis. The rumor was that Bruno was not turning up for training after this, and only getting to VP 10mins before the Saturday games was kicking off (before I get slated this is what I was told from a source).
