Really? Well, these guys are saying the majority of PL sides (which play a full season last time I checked) use 4-2-3-1 ;)

Liverpool, chelsea, arsenal, spurs, even stoke play 4-1-3-2 or 4-1-4-1 , Villa play 4-4-2, couldnt comment on wba, norwich, fulham as i turn motd off then!

4231 is used by all of the top teams in club comps too.

 

Are you sure its not 4-1-4-1, barcelona play with one holding and two in front, as do liverpool, man city too. so dont know which top clubs you are on about

If you have the right personnel, 4-2-3-1 can quickly become 4-3-3 or 4-5-1 and even 4-4-1-1. I think the strength is in its flexibility.

IMHO, MA shouldn't just choose one formation and stick to it but have options at his disposal depending on the opposition.

To me, 4-2-3-1 is a tweaked 4-4-2 with the wingers pushing on in front of the two holding midfielders and one of the strikers dropping deeper.

4 2 3 1 needs the right people..esp the 2..they must be prepared to sit and yet also be creative otherwise you end up with 1 or 0 in front of the back 4 or two guys contributing nowt when you have the ball

 

As to England..we didn't fail cos of formation..it was the kr@pness of the players in the formation

You need to have several options making use of the players on the bench to change the system not the personnel. If one system is not working because the opposition has outfoxed us then counter it with plan B. We all know Micky likes plan A and sticks to it and I must say he is a lot more qualified than me so what do I know.

I had a few arguments with people with about how the formation was not a bad one, just that it was badly implemented. He played pope out wide a few times. Gannon problem wasn't that he wanted to change things, but that he tried too quickly and couldn't implement it because he was a bit mental. Though it got to the point where anything he did would be crucified because he had lost the fans, the staff and the dressing room.

Because he had completely the wrong squad to do it, I remember Richards and Pope playing on the wing in games. Surprised he didn't try to play them wing backs too!

If we play with 2 wingers then you have to go 451. We proved in L2 that any reasonable team overpowered our 2 central midfielders. The defensive midfield position is a specialist position not a converted Gerrard style role. If you haven't got a specialist sitting midfielder then having 3 midfielders plus the wide men will normally suffice .

As has been said previously though, this formation does rely on a Pope style striker up top not a Williamson running from deeper
