Summer transfer rumours and speculation

Featured Replies

Just got to say while Tolaj has been sold and an U21 Brown arrived on loan the squad now has only 21 senior outfield players such that there is a squad space for one more senior (over 21) outfield player also whether permanent or loan the club has only three loan players Gaucci/Faal/Brown and so it must be assumed the club would at very least want the full quota of 22 outfield players and therefore the fans should expect a signing on monday.

Most people expected Tolaj to go, but when? Jan or summer 2026? Plymouth missed out on their targets and so came in late for Tolaj. The later in the window the more strikers cost, unless a seller is desperate to off-load. Moore has had Brown on his list for 3 windows as a striker, whether there is an opportunity to sign permanently who knows?

As I said last night I think we were expecting Lorent to leave in January and not this Summer. We were also taken aback by Plymouth's approach because they had missed out on a lot of their targets before eventually deciding to get Lorent and he was probably not even in their top 5 list of the strikers that they were after this Summer, so as a result of Plymouth missing out on so many targets they essentially panic bought him IMO.

I thought the rumour around Tolaj was that they were interested for 2 weeks and had bit prior to meeting the release clause? Were often told how this set up prepares for everything and I don’t think they have in this case.

When the Lorent deal happened I went back to the 2 weeks before when Tom Cleverley said that a significant bid had been made for a striker as I thought it was for Lorent, but then in the Substack article Matt Hancock said it all happened very quickly (in the week that he signed for Plymouth) which then told me that the significant bid 2 weeks earlier that Plymouth made for a striker wasn't for Lorent after all.

No Tolaj in the squad for the cup game at Blackpool is telling for me. Must have been interest hence why he wasn't cup tied. Tend to think we should have got our new man in before we let him go. Start of this season just been a mess, players in and out of the squad on matchdays with no real explanation. Can see further outgoings in the next 24 hours

Said the same thing leaving the game yesterday.  We basically play with 5 defenders, 3 defensive minded midfielders and 2 strikers, we are expecting so much from the front 2 and if they don't score, other than Headley I don't see anyone else scoring.  We have to get another forward thinking player in the team, either attacking midfielder or we move to 4 at the back.  I would like to see a team of;

Gauci

Clarke Heneghan Humphreys Headley

Walters Croasdale Garrity (if fit or attack minded player signed tomorrow)

Rico (new striker) Curtis

Tomorrow is a massive day in the season for me, we have to get something done, we are not far away but 2 starting players need to be signed up to help us, these need to be ready to hit the ground running and straight into the team not players short of match fitness who will take a month to get up to speed.  This next month/6 weeks is massive before facing some of the more fancied teams in October/November/December.

I know that with the sendings off we're used to playing with ten men, but I draw the line at starting with ten men...

Rumoured on X that Marcus Forss is moving from Middlesbrough to a League One club. Transfermarkt values him at £2.2m so guess it’s not us, though thinking about it, for a free-scoring forward like him it would be worth pushing the boat out. Chances are it would absolutely make our season and restore morale across the club as well as secure our place in L1.

Fantasy? We need to think carefully whether it would cost us more to go back down. If only…

PS Oh, was coached by Dazza at West Brom when he was in their academy. Clutching at straws, I know.

The problem we have is that every club is in the market for strikers.  Managers are saying it after games every week. By the sounds of it, Plymouth lost out on numerous targets before coming in for Tolaj, which illustrates the issue.  Whilst unproven at the level, Tolaj was the guy most likely to score the majority of our goals and was seen as someone who they think will score goals for them, but it’s still a gamble, an expensive one if it doesn’t work out.  We’ve got Stockley with the experience, currently injured, the rest looks a hotchpotch right now.  Add in too few goals from the rest of the team and you can see why it’s almost a disaster if we concede, there’s little chance of finding a way back.  Some of our forward options may come good but we’re running out of time, there’s the factor of team confidence which comes from winning games.  It’s good that we got the cup wins if only because it keeps that belief in the players.  Worth remembering that a couple of debatable decisions from match officials have contributed to our bad start but they aren’t the only reason.  We could sign prime Messi but if a goalscoring opportunity falls to a different player then that player has to make it count.  Half the team have had chances and usually failed to even hit the target.

Tolaj would not have been cup-tied since the game was played in a transfer window.

Read the EFL rules, applies in January also but only affects the semi-finalists.

According to Pete O'Rourke Lincoln have rejected an offer of over £1M for Rob Street from an unnamed L1 club.

Could match the rumour mentioned on here that we’d had a bid rejected over the Tolaj money if true… all be it though Donny would be all over that one.

Does he have a release clause?
