Match thread : Port Vale v Colchester United, 1st Oct

Featured Replies

I think as a sport we do need to question if the worship of 'housery' has gone too far. Colchester fans are revelling in the manner in which they drew - they'd rather draw that way than by playing well. Tovide chose to celebrate in front of the Lorne Street rather than the 150 who had a 4 hour drive back. We've become a sport obsessed with 'ooooh look, he's shushing, he's rattled them!'. fueled by social media,  and it's filtering into the game, degrading the quality.

Time-wasting is now being actively celebrated by fans. Feigning injury and being 'clever' is seen as a positive. It's always been a part of the game but it's now a source of pride rather than a necessary evil. Some of us were guilty when Lucas was making a holy show of himself.

Dunno. Adebayor sprinting the length of the Etihad to kneeslide in front of the Arsenal fans was funny, but it's now got to a point where winding up the opposition is a good in itself, and it's worsening the actual sport.

If you want to drive 400 miles round trip to watch that and celebrate it then rather them than me. The late goal covered up though, if we win that 1-0 their fans would probably be seething at the negativity of the set up, timewasting etc. Its only because they got out of jail with the keeper error at the end.

Listen we are all disappointed with only a point/ continuation of Tuesday night issue! Please make your mind up on which way you view Darren Moore most on here change their minds on a match to match basis! Overall a big improvement on last season & more to come I am sure. Hope Byers injury not too bad. VTID

Vale oh vale, will you ever learn!? The midfield is about as safe as tel aviv!😩

I am struggling to work out who was offside for our disallowed goal.

I literally see nobody here saying he's great one game and then awful another.

I think some, myself very much included, see him as a very limited manager. That doesn't mean you can't still wish him well, or be swayed by him if he does well. He and the team are doing okay this season thus far. Nothing to write home about, but nothing to be too critical of either.

Very harsh that.

Tolaj was very definitely, though only just, offside.

The goalkeeper coach is surely at fault as well, he coaches the keepers!

I think it's better that fans don't lock into a certain view (Moore is good/Moore is bad) and defend that come what may. It gets very silly. Changing minds is for the best.

At the minute it's a bit uncertain. We're 30 games in to the Moore tenure and only now beginning to see a few signs of progress, but that's tempered with some very silly problems which need to get sorted pretty quickly. This squad should probably be playing a bit better than it is. We enter the latter stages of most games holding onto points.

Notts County is the fabled '10th game' and we'll likely be between 5th-10th, which is absolutely fine but it's very hard to argue at present that Moore is adding a great deal. He had bad players last year and they continued to be bad, and he has good players this year who are good but not anything more.

Wednesday fans said they were never convinced or enamoured, but he sort of bundled over the line with a massive budget after falling short in the playoffs at the first attempt. That's sort of where I'm sitting - he's doing OK, he'll probably take us up at some point by virtue of outspending everyone else, other managers might do better but it probably isn't worth the risk of changing any time soon in case we get it wrong.

Agreed I hate it. The adebayor one I don’t mind, if fans are abusing you for no real reason fair enough. But Tovide was a tosser all game, he’s obviously going to get stick. I don’t know how he’s not embarrassed rolling round the floor all game.

I’d absolutely hate if vale played like that. They showed second half they were half decent going forwards. If I went an away game and we were diving round everywhere and time wasting from minute 1 rather than attacking I’d be pretty naffed off.

Now that our constructive OVF commentators have all vented and condemned Ripley to the bench, if not the gallows, have another few reviews of the build-up and execution of the goal (about 8:50 in) -

1. Vale giving the ball away cheaply

2. Hall in midfield getting out-muscled by Tovide despite repeatedly fouling him

3. Cover and Garrity in defence both backing off Gordon rather than getting in a solid challenge, and so giving him plenty of space to get the shot away

4. Gordon putting in a cracking shot from distance, which swerved viciously in the air as it flew

5. Ripley adjusting in mid-air to the swerving ball and only managing to palm it out rather than putting it over or round

6. Hall again getting outdone by Tovide, who reacted much quicker to the loose ball and poked it in

Once again, mostly not Ripley.

Poor ball retention and poor defensive marking from the team as a whole.

Or if you look at it another way. Fairly routine save for a professional goalkeeper is ballsed up and costs us a goal. Tovide didn’t exactly react quicker than Hall, the ball was just pushed straight to him.

With hindsight we are all brilliant managers.

I posted pre match I would play Paton rather than Hackford and pre Swindon I said Debrah should be starting tonight to deal with the pace of the Colchester striker BUT 5 at the back worked a treat Saturday and was very offensive. It would have been difficult to justify the change and we were poor with 4 at the back tonight albeit better offensively for 5 minutes.

Personally I think Debrah started the season well(when he came on as well as the goal he also put in a couple of great tackles and blocks) and then he was dropped from the team,we are way to slow in the centre of defence without him there,so for me he has to be in there on Saturday and like you I was also saying about Paton up top with Stockley so I would also like to see that change as well(but i doubt it will happen as for some reason he isn't getting on at all really).
