Listening to the A&V pod earlier and the subject of backups were discussed, i.e. the second string/bench options.

Everywhere else was great but for the defence, "Sang / Debrah / Yak (now gone) / Jones" made me wince, I'll be honest.

ATM the balance of the squad feels a bit like

 

I suppose I'd keep the disappointing, underperforming but expensive Grant as finding a natural LWB won't be easy (Tyler Blackett and Declan John are now free agents but are full backs. Callum McFadzean just released by Wrexham?) but I'd be mega excited if we could shift Jones, Sang and Lowe on and bring in

2x Legge type centre halves. Danny Batth's been mentioned, I would be giggling like <ovf censored> about the bets I've got open if that came off. That's the type of reliable presence at the back I'm imagining. I believe he's currently training with Wolves U21s and is from the west mids, not far from where DM is from.
2x out and out full backs/wing backs instead of making do - Sang is not a defender, please god no more. Mitch Clark's injury record suggests we absolutely need competition there.
1x LW as competition for Curtis unless that Diamond from Soton can switch sides and impresses enough to be signed on a season long loan

Wouldn't mind Dan Jones doing likewise, as well as not being available thru injury I've never seen a professional football defender misjudge the flight of the ball so much.

Does anyone remember this winger from the Newcastle U21s tinpot trophy game last season? He scored their first pen in the shootout.

Haven't heard owt, but they've released him. Can play both wings and as a 10. Apparently he absolutely battered Wrexham in their PJT match.

3 in 7 for England U17s. 10 and 6 assists in 56 PL2 games. He wouldn't count towards the squad limit this season due to his age.

Must be honest I'm not sure an ageing giant centrehalf is the way to go. All outfield players do a lot more running than 10 years ago. Vale Park is a big pitch and a very big pitch for a 35 year old centrehalf if you play with a high defensive line. Sproson, Glover, Pilkington, Aspin and Collins were not particularly tall (or broad) but did well at Vale Park. 

Whether DM brings in a 28yr old or 35yr old I trust him to bring in who he thinks is the right player especially in the CB position

30 years old. 6'3. Just released by Fleetwood. Played 37 times last season. 179 L1 appearances in the last 6 years. Manchester born.

Played under Moore at Sheff Wed too. 

 

Sean Morrison or Danny Batth would be dream signings and exactly what I think we're lacking at CB.

Both 6'3, both ex captains, both good players with experience higher up.
